    Is this a stroke penalty?

    Playing match play Men's senior intersectional at Eagle Creek.
    Par 3 8th hole.
    I am on the right side just inside the bush line. I have a stick I can't move behind the ball.
    When I go to make my swing I hit a branch. (not sure how that happened because I don't remember a branch being a problem on my practice swings)It stops me before I make contact with the ball.
    I did not see anything fall from what I hit on my backswing.
    My intent all through the shot was to hit the ball. So, I called a stroke on myself.

    This is not like Tiger who always stops his downswing. I had no intention of stopping.

    Did the branch break and were you able to continue the swing? If you stopped and nothing was moved to improve your swing then no stroke and no penalty but if you continued and missed the ball then it is a stroke. I'm sure your opponents weren't going to make a claim if you called the stroke and didn't hit the ball. The way it sounds is that you made the correct call.

    I never finished the swing but it wasn't because I tried to stop. It was a combination of being so surprised I hit something and it being a very gentle swing to start with.
    The club just never made it to the ball.

    A stroke is the forward movement of the club with the intent to hit the ball. Sounds like you made a stroke, but there is no penalty.

    Sorry, you are right. It just felt like a penalty stroke because I never hit the ball.

    an exeption to that definition is if you stop to check your back swing which is not a stroke. but you said you did not mean to stop your club so that does not apply

    Did your forward swing stop before the clubhead reached the ball?
