Club length in hazard with belly putter.
I have an interresting question for the members here. Just saw Carl Peterson use his belly putter to meausure two club lengths in order to drop his ball out of a hazard.
Should he not use the driver or can he use any length club i.e. belly putter or wedge.
Does he have an advantage with the belly putter cause its longer?
What do the rules say?
Thanks

The Rules allow you to use any club. If you happen to carry a long putter, good for you!
Not fat anymore. Need to get better at golf now!

But you may not borrow/use a club which is longer than any you have in your bag.

the rules say that you should use the club that you would make your next stroke with, but their is no penalty for not doing so.

In taking relief from a hazard like Peterson did you can use any club in your bag to measure so he was wise to use his long putter.
tyorke2: you should use the club that you would make your next stroke with to measure for your nearest point of relief and then from there you can use whatever club you want from your bag to measure your one club relief.

Tim: To add to what Gerry said above, the reality is that you don't have to use any club to measure anything, and that includes the placing of the tees in the ground, between which a/the ball is to be dropped. BUT, you must drop the ball in the proper area that could be determined if you did measure and place tees. "Should" means just that - you should, but do not have to.
Example: Your ball is on the left side of a cart path that parallels the right side of the hole and you are right handed. Picking up and dropping the ball that comes to rest a foot or two from the edge of the path, not nearer the hole, will get you in an acceptable dropping area, without actually measuring. Having said all of that, to avoid any possible questionable drops, it is always good practice to do the actual measuring and tee placing, before dropping. And remember to drop from shoulder height, arm extended.
