Bunkers at British Open
My wife made a comment about the water in the bunkers at the Open. Why dont they just vacuum the water out of the bunkers? Does anyone know the ruling of the R&A .
I see they have to play them when wet.
Thanks

They were sucking the water out but the problem is that they are at the water table and the water is seeping back in from the bottom. This is making it very tough for the players in finding relief within the bunker that isn't closer to the hole. Today they said there are only eight that still have a lot of water in them.

By the way, it isn't the British Open. It is The Open Championship.

Incidentally, I was talking to one of my club's greenkeepers who had been drafted in as one of the 65 extras to help on the course at night and early morning, then following the players with rakes during the day. He reminded me that the bottom of some of the deep fairway bunkers is below the level of the Irish Sea when the tide is in.
He also pointed out that last day presented a different bunker problem. Some were still wet and heavy and others were dry and quite fluffy.

Indeed. He did comment that he wasn't aware of any players actually complaining.
