    Cancellation Wheels in Motion

    http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story.asp?id=114925

What an absolute shame. Greed and stupidity are the undoing of the NHL. Bury the league and bring on the WHA.

It's about time. Besides it's almost golf season.

Did not miss it a bit.

What did we miss, Steve? The owners and the players deserve each other. By the time they come to their senses they will have lost their diehard fans and will almost assuredly have killed any chance to secure big dollar contracts in the US market. I'm with you, Steve. Bring on the golf season.

Sorry covanant, the league can't legally use replacements. It's a management lockout, not a player's strike. Not that I'm on the player's side either, but union-busting is illegal.

I do like the idea of having more tee times though.

Players finally broke on a cap...they're not that far off ($12M plus or minus some details), and with another full day before the "announcement" we might see a season. Its good to see the players union break on a cap. Too bad Bettman didnt have a drop dead date a month ago, this may have been resolved by now. All along people have been saying that Goodenow needs a deadline to negotiate....we'll see if they were right tomorrow....

That came right before "Holy crap! We're going to have to look for work, and probably take less money!" I think there's some validity in what some of the owners have been saying about player's opinions not being heard by union brass.

down to about a 6.5 million difference after last nights negotiations....if a deal isnt made today it will be very disappointing. both sides keep saying "and thats my final offer" but keep moving.....hopefully the 1pm announcement will be that a deal is made, not that the seasons cancelled....im not giving up hope yet.

If they don't bridge the 6.5M gap then they (owners and players) are a bigger bunch of babies than I thought. Surely this is the best offer that either side is going to get, take it now while it's on the table!

It would be terrible to lose the season over such little money (for them not me).

Looks like both sides felt that there was nothing left to talk about after getting so close!

Actually, that's not entirely true. They can't do it now, but as of Sept 9th 2005, the league can apply to US labour courts to file an "impasse" in negotiations. If the court rules in the league's favour, the NHL can assert any CBA it wants, and it's up to the union if they want to sign or walk.

If they walk, the contracts of ALL players are null and void, and they become free agents in the eyes of the NHL (unrestricted). There will be issues with the PA, but for the league's intent, that doesn't matter.

It'll certainly be sad if they don't even talk about this more now that they got so close. It sounds like they don't plan on meeting for a while, and if it doesn't get done by June, I'd say the chances of getting hockey in October as planned is 30/70 against.

Honestly, I really don't give a rat's ***** about the NHL anymore. After 30+ years as a loyal fan I've given up. I hope the league never recovers. I'm not angry that they didn't reach an agreement, I'm pissed that both sides gave Joe and Jane Public, the ticket and merchandise buyers, zero consideration throughout the entire process, and I've written a note to the WHA saying as much.

I'm supporting the underdog from now on. They were a good idea back in the 70's that was 30 years ahead of it's time. I hope that the WHA can make a go of it and give the fans some affordable entertainment, and create some jobs for the ushers and concession workers who've lost out this time around. Gretzky, Messier, Howe and Hull played there. Who's to say a kid like Crosby won't?

    GO WHA GO!!
