What if you say you hit it thin but you actually hit it pure? Is that a penalty? How do they prove it? It's a dumb rule!

Try to think of it this way. It's like cheating on a test. ("Psst. What did you get for question 4?")
With very few exceptions, golf is a solitary game, and the player is meant to figure things out for himself.
Golf is also a game of honour, and as in life, it's considered improper to ask about private things that are none of your business.
It's one of the few times in life where the phrase, "don't ask, don't tell" is appropriate.When applying the Rules, you follow them line by line. You don't read between them.
