Help with DIY refinish on Circa 62 no 2 charcoal mist
Looking to clean my putter up a bit with a refinish...problem is that I believe it was originally the charcoal mist finish which i think was essentially a black nickel plating. It has partially/half way worn off so what would be the best way to remove the rest to bare metal so I can just gun blue the carbon steel? I know the coke/clr/naval jelly method will not work as from what i know, the charcoal mist was applied using a plating process..any help would be great...my only guess would be sand paper and sanding it down..if so, anybody ever done it and could possibly include steps and grit levels...thanks

The best way to remove it might be getting it done professionally. These guys might be able to help. http://www3.sympatico.ca/gary.courville/

Thanks...i've talked to Gary a few times..problem is his turnaround time ( I believe he does work in batch loads) is not the quickest and this is my gamer...

you could try using a paint stripper gel...let it sit and then remove using super fine steel wool. Wear gloves while trying this.

have you tried this pain stripper gel yourself? I wonder if it would remove the finish...it's half worn off and unevent on the putter already....

i removed the finish on a putter using Heirloom paint and varnish remover gel from Home Depot. The sales woman at Home Depot mention this paint stripper will remove paint on a bike frame so it should do the job on a putter head. i believe the finish was baked or plated on as i initially tried soaking it in CLR with no results.
I put the gel on the putter and let it sit for about 30 minutes then i used super fine steel wool on it while still coated with the gel...with a little elbow gresase...the finish came off. i used a flat screw driver along with the steel wool for the hard to reach areas. Pretty happy with the results.
Just wear gloves and be in well ventilated area.
