What would you shoot at Augusta National?

With the Masters tournament approaching, what do you think you'd shoot at August if you were lucky enough to play a round? From tournament tees, tournament pin placements, 12+ stimpmeter ... oh and in case you don't know how tough the course is, here's some info:

Ray Romano shot 101 from the tips a few years back (http://sports.espn.go.com/golf/maste...ory?id=2394886). I'd like to think that if I'm on my game I could at least break 90 fairly easily!

On the other hand, if I play like I did this past weekend... they'd likely kick me off the course after 9 holes.

i'd be lucky to break 100, especially the first time around. I was just reading golf digest where one of the guys said he practiced putting on his kitchen floor to get used to the speed of the greens.

If I play my "normal" game, I should break 90. The nice thing about Augusta is that if you miss the fairway the rough is not that tough.

Just keep it out of the hazards and putt defensively.

With nearly all the par 4's over 450 yards (one at 500, eeek), and a par 3 at 230, that would be a day full of trying to get it up and down on incredibly quick greens trying to save par/bogey. Although if Ray Romano could shoot 101, I'd put myself in the low 90's first time out

I think you guys are all being a little conservative. The greens are from hell fast and brutal to read properly.
I would shoot 120+ at least for 18 holes, that is if I had my A game and the putter was working.
I would probably be hitting snowmen all over the place, only because the greens are insane.

I thought so too at first because I saw the Haney project and how bad his swing is on tv, and he's a 16 capper. But on that day he said he was driving the ball great, and that the course was a lot more wide open than in looks on tv. Most of the strokes he lost were from bad chips and putting. Getting to the green wasn't hard, it was putting the ball in the hole which killed him.He 6 putted a hole!!!

I agree with Denis, I'd probably miss a lot of greens in regulation and rely on chipping and putting to keep the score low.

I've played my share of US Open courses and other PGA courses. I'm pretty sure breaking 90 is doable at Augusta. If I golfed out of my mind, 80 would be a possibility.

If you can't putt fast greens, then you are screwed. I like fast greens. Just start it on line.

Don't be so humble. It really depends on how well you are playing that day. If you are driving it long and hitting it straight you're gonna do ok. the real challenge I see is the length, but I have a hunch it plays a litle shorter than the scorecard suggests.

Pesonally, to play it tomorrow I'd blow the century mark. But if I brought the A game I think I could card a bunch of decent holes. It's still just a golf course.

Well as a 10 cap who can go from one extreme to the other, as in 76 one day and 99 the next, I'm going to err on the high side as my course management is not usually very good. I'd shoot 106.

That would be one issue. Getting distracted or being super excited while you are playing and as a result not playing your best game.

For comparison's sake I used the longest and most difficult course I have ever played: Lionhead Legends. At the time I was a solid 9 handicap and the course measured 6934 yards and had a 74.7 rating and slope of 150. I am a medium to long hitter, so the length of the course was not an issue....unless I hit a foul ball. I made 2 birdies...and shot 105. Carded a 12 on a par 4. So I do not think I would break 100 at Augusta National, playing my Sunday best. Just bogeying every hole would put you at 90, and I usually have one or two "others."

Yeah those darn "others" always get me too. I can be going along fine shooting par or bogey on my first 3 or 4 holes and then wam! 8! And it always seems like after I get one another is inevitable. Stupid game!

I would think in the mid 80s. You have to keep the ball in play and then putt like god to have a chance.

Considering the awe factor, just being at Augusta in the first place and the HUGE intimidation factor for the first 5 or 6 holes, I would be happy breaking 100. Being a 15 capper, if Ray Romano can shoot 101... why not.

I was recently at Pinehurst and have to say I was completely in awe there. So much history and walking through the clubhouse and seeing all the memorabilia lining the walls was frikkin amazing! We played #1 and to know I walked where the likes of Harry Vardon walked was simply brilliant. Augusta would top it for sure.

99. My short game is my strength. Like someone above also stated, the rough is not too nasty, so.. that should not be a huge factor. I would go in and try to have a decent putt for par on every hole, by playing safe.

I think you're all wrong. There was a story in Golf Digest some years ago about a good 4 handicap who played Augusta from the tips .

He said that he had a very decent short game and even if he was not the longest hitter he wasn't short .

On almost every par 4 his caddie whas handling him a 3 wood for his second shot to the green and specialy those with elevation.

I don't remember what he shot but i think it was a bit over 100.

So considering that you guys have never played Augusta you would at least lose 15 shots just on greens .

And it's without talking about sand and water.

Can you imagine that each year there is always many of these pros, and i'm talking about golf machines that shoots in the 80's.

So even with your A game you would'n break 90.

I know there are some good players on that site but Augusta for the first time!!!!................not a chance.

By the way.....I don't believe that Ray Romano shot 101.
