    Custom putter making of

    Hi everyone,

Member gapwedge contacted me to make him a custom rounded off center shaft mallet at 333 grams.

The first step was to draw it in CAD and get approval from gapwedge on the shape. It took three versions (he requested changes, it was re-drawn) but I got the design where he wanted it.

    Serge,

After the CAD design had been approved, I did the CAM programming and toolpaths required.

The putter head starts as a 2" by 1" by 4" long free machining brass billet.

I skim .010" off each side to ensure solid clamping. Then stage 1 is machined. Stage 1 skims the top, does 2 pre roughing passes, a final roughing pass and a finish pass around the perimeter.

The putter was then flipped over and milled to the finished thickness.

With that done, stage 2 could start. Stage 2 uses two tools. The first is a 3/8" diameter, 3 flute, 1.125" cutting length high helix end mill. This was used in stage 1 as well. This will do the majority of the roughing due to the fairly high rigidity. Tool 2 is a 3/8" diameter, 3 flute, 1.75" cutting length high helix end mill. Due to the increased cutting length, this tool is not as rigid and is prone to chatter and deflection. It is only used when the additional cutting length is required.

Tool 1 operations. Two pre-roughing and a final roughing pass in the flange area to a depth of 1.100". This is the majority of the material removal.

Tool 2 operations. Roughing and finishing the sole to a depth of 1.700". Roughing and finishing the flange to a depth of 1.200"

That's all for now. More will be coming soon,
    Serge

This one is a full custom (one off) so is $400 plus PST. I will be making a mallet similar to this as my next model soon. Price on that will be $235 center shaft, $275 plumber and short flow necks, $290 long flow neck + shipping.

I'm going to put a couple different CAD versions with a poll up on Golfwrx.com to help make up my mind on the final shape.

    Thanks,
    Serge

Very nice work , are you plating it or leaving it Raw / Polished?
We have a milling machine at my workplace and i'm trying to convince our machinist that this type of thing would be a great side project for him

nice work I've been wondering if my buddies who work as machinists could pull something like this off.
please post the link to the golfwrx forum so we can take a look at your designs.

Milling is complete. I did the stamping first, because it would intersect the shaft hole drilled hole and I didn't want this to get deformed while stamping (if the hole had been milled first). After stamping the shaft hole is drilled and then milled to size at the requested 72*. This process involves spot facing with the end mill (5/16" diameter 3 flute), pilot drilling with a 1/4" drill and finally plunging and interpolating with the 5/16 end mill. The face is milled after that with a 1.125" diameter single insert face mill. With that milling is complete and I checked the weight. Weight is 335 grams which is right where I want to be. Rounding the edges and some light sanding will bring it right to the requested 333 grams.

The edges were rounded and surfaces given a light sanding with a fine sanding pad. The customer asked for a satin finish.

Weight was re-measured right at the 333G target.

After that the paintfill was applied and we have a finished putter. The shaft epoxy is curing right now.

Hopefully the customer will come by Sunday to pick up his new putter and get a round or two in before the snow flies.

Additional details: 35.5" shaft with pingman black (hence the lower weight).

    Well done Serge,

I really like the clean look - no distractions. Focus on the target, feel the putt, and let it roll.

I looked at your website quickly but was wondering what other designs you make. I really like a napa style putter are you able to make something similar?

    What about broomstick putters?

Great thread by the way. I like the putter. Very unique.

Just rolled a few putts over carpet this evening. Excellent feel and great balance. The brass head gives a much softer feel than any steel. I like it. A lot. Well done, Serge.

No Napa style at the moment. I could do a Blade with a long flow neck that would be pretty similar. Not on the order form but I could get it done.

Right now there are only two models, but I'm currently working on a third.

Going with option 2. It has to be tested and the site updated before release. Could be another couple months before all is said and done. This one will be great for bellies and long putters. Very stable. My Blade and HT can be made into bellies and long putters as well.

Full customs can be made in addition to the main models.

Thank you Rob, glad you like it. Hopefully you get to try it on course this year.

I gamed this putter for the first time last month in Georgia. Shot an 87 with 28 putts (yes, I did spend some time in the bushes off the tee). Excellent balance and nice soft feel. This is a keeper.

    Well done again, Serge.
