Swing and Miss - Does imcomplete swing with intention count as one stroke?

Last Sunday I played with some friends at Lombard Glen. I tried to chip a ball with intention around the green of Hole 9 but unfortunately I cut my wedge head into ground before the ball about 3 inches away. The ball didn't move. Should it count as one stroke? My point is my swing was not complete because it stopped before the ball however I did intent to hit the ball. Actually I would blame the bare ground and uphill slope.

Thank you very much for your advice.

The definition of a "stroke" will answer your question.

    Stroke
A “stroke” is the forward movement of the club made with
the intention of striking at and moving the ball, but if a player
checks his downswing voluntarily before the clubhead reaches
the ball he has not made a stroke.

Your club moved forward and you intended to hit the ball. That means you made a stroke.

It doesn't matter if you hit the ball, missed completely, hit a tree on the way and broke your club in half, hit your foot instead of the ball, etc. All that matters is that you were trying to hit it.

It's like you're married to a woman, and you text another woman to have an affair, but you accidentally text your wife, technically you didn't cheat on her, but you intended to, so it's gonna cost you big time.

.... yup it's gonna cost you a lot more than a stroke. In fact with my wife it might take me a week or so to find my ball(s)...
