Gimmick Holes
I'm curious what people here think constitutes a "gimmick" hole. I've seen the #10 on both the Nation and Falcon Ridge described this way (in fact the whole back nine of Falcon Ridge sometimes). I've played Falcon Ridge and the #10 is basically a tight fairway with a fairly small target area which sets up a generally pretty short approach shot if you hit it, but cutting the corner makes it a VERY short approach shot, if you are a long hitter I could see hitting the green.
What's your definition?

If you look up the definition of gimmick hole in wikipedia, there's a picture of Chateau Cartier's 17th hole.
You only get out of something what you put into it

The straight up a mountain one, right? Is that a par 3? It is a little silly, I agree. Would "1 ridiculous element to make it a challenge" be your definition then?

#9 ( I think its 9 ) at Montebello is 115 yards max straight up hill too. Hopefully I can tame it Sunday!

Gimmicky hole = dumb hole. The last hole of Raceview is also on my list. It's like playing into and then out of a ravine.

My vote goes to the 18th at Glenmar

I've heard #9 South at Outaouais described by the members there as a "popcorn hole" several times and I agree.
I'd say any ridiculous change in elevation makes a hole a little gimmicky but is probably there due to the natural terrain that existed where somebody wanted to make a golf course.
When you design something gimmicky like a U shaped green though . . . c'monEven I've never heard of me

I'm note sure that there are gimmick holes.
I've played mountain courses where you do effectively hit into an upslope it is part of the terrain and part of the challenge. In fact one of the most amazing courses I ever played was Arrowhead in Colorado. They have a the par 3's 180 yard hole. The elevated tee box is between two massive rock outcropings. You shoot over the tops of trees to a pin placement well below you. I never thought of that as gimmicky, club selection wind made that a real challenge. Not to mention one of the most beautiful holes I've ever seen anywhere. How about a green with darn near roller coaster type movement completely surrounded by water like 17 at Stadium Sawgrass, or 18 at TPC Louisianna with a forced carry of 240 yards to a 30 yard wide fairway. Thinking of hitting par on that hole you need to hit 3 of your best shots ever. I guess I consider all of those tough holes. Not sure about the u shaped green though.... that may actually be gimmicky....

Not only does Glenmar #18 have a U Shaped green, but in the middle of the U guarding the hole and most of the green is a bunker, insanity just plain silly.
Obviously you're not a golfer.

btw, maybe they modelled after #17 at Glen Abbey.

12 at canadian. 120 degree dogleg. stupid whole design, and they don't even have the common sense to throw in a yardage marker on the fairway, so that you have something to judge club selection by.
