Pond Balls - are they good?

If golf balls are completely enclosed in a sealed outer layer, why would used pond balls be of lesser quality than those picked up in the woods? I have been told that pond balls aren't as good as other used balls. Is it all an image thing? All in golfer's heads?

I picked up a bunch of Pro Vs from a fellow that got them from a pond. I did not feel a difference in my game from my other used Pro Vs - Is it just in my head?

Here is an article from GOLF DIGEST on the pros and cons of the reprocessed golf ball. Or, more precisely, the reprocessed water ball
