    46 putts

Has anyone on here ever had this many? Or even heard of such a thing? I fired a 90 the other day, hit %50 fairwars, %50 GIR and had 46 putts. I don't know what to say. I had 10 3 putts. One of which was a par on a par 5. I think I had the yips. I'm going to take a break from golf for a little bit.

I don't know that I have kept score when I have had that many...but there are days when it certainly feels that way.

It's probably time you make friends with a belly putter.

On Sunday during team match play we were using my drives even though it was usually shorter and in the rough because my partner was hot with his irons and I was hot with my putter. Sank at least three over 25 feet and never missed one shorter than 10. We three putted only on the first hole and the rest were about 50% 1-putts.

This was the day after I three putted many of the holes on the same course in the same conditions.

I played 27 holes that day. I actually made 2 birdie putts in the 2 man scramble in the evening. This game of golf is so clearly mental its not funny: the 46 putts was in my club match play, where I lost 2 down on 17 (I was 1 down with 2 to play, I hit the green, my opponent missed way right, but he got up and down, and I (you guessed it) 3 putted for bogey!

I wouldn't mind trying a belly putter actually.

Putting is the best part of my game but I've considered trying a belly on occasion (it really is hard to miss with it anchored in your belly button). I've seen quite a few guys improve a ton with one. If you stick with a conventional putter I would read Stan Utley's Art of Putting.

Don't you need a belly for a belly putter?

My two cents, you need to start putting without fear as if you were a 4 year old. Just get up there and hit it.
Not fat anymore. Need to get better at golf now!

Wow. I don't think I've ever been above 40. Even at that I wanted to break my putter in half and stab myself with the pieces. My sincere condolences.

Did anyone catch this on video? It sounds like it would be good to watch after a tough day at work.

I'm by no means a good putter but 38 or 39 is about my upper limit on a bad day . .
Sounds like just one bad day of the yips (I'm guessing a few 3-5 footers were missed).
Little practice and a mental reset will do you just fine.

You gotta focus on distance control rather than aim because getting the distance right should make you 2 putt most of the time.

One of the 3 putts I actually putt right off the green, then putted back on from the fringe, and then holed that, so maybe that is a one putt?

hoolio, you're right, it was comical. In the tragic-comedy genre.

Just out of curiosity Andrew, did you have a speed issue or line? If line, was it mostly right? Left? or both sides?

I had 40 during a junior tournament at Pineview once. I think that was my worst ever. I think I shot an 87 or something. I had about 8-9 3 jacks. I missed some putts that were no more than a foot or so.

For me, when I miss right or left, it is usually a mechanical thing. When I misjudge speed it is all about concentration. Sounds like you just had a off off off day!

Get a putting lesson where the teacher can show you the 4 basic skills of putting
    1 read the green
    2 aim your putter
3 start the ball on the intended line
    4 contol your speed

Most of the time people set up and aim way too far off and then the stoke has lots of body movement and wrist action which causes a lack of distance control.

Well, well.... I was reading this thread and thinking to myself: "Poor guy, I'm glad I'm a decent putter. In fact, my last couple of rounds have been above average!". And then I go out for a round at Canadian and have the worst putting round in a looong time. Haven't counted the putts, but it must've been more than 40. Granted, their greens were in pretty bad shape with lots of sand, but still... What made it worse is that I had one of the best ball-striking days in a while, so I'm left wondering what could've been... Oh well, that's the game, just have to forget about it ASAP.

Stop reading the putts with your eyes and start trusting your feet. It will pass like all slumps....

I suck ass at putting. I have been consistently in the 36 to 40 range all season. I've tried a blade, a mallet with a fat grip and now I am using a belly putter and so far it sucks ass. I missed 7 putts within 3-4 feet last round. Just can't hit those to save my life. I am going to try and keep my head down better and see if that helps. My playing partner this week said I was lifting my head.

frayed knot mate...the PGA tour stats say that ANY shot you hit after your ball has settled on the green is a Putt. So in theory, if you hit a par 3 GIR, putted off the green into a bunker, flubbed your sand shot, hacked out to the fringe then chipped in... your double bogey would rate as a GIR and a 4 putt

thankfully we are not on the PGA tour
