Or, for a cheaper option, go to Apple Saddlery (on Innes by Costoc) and get Burkenstock inserts. My doc recommneded these 8 years ago and I've worn them ever since. ~$40/pair. Cheap enough to buy lots.

This sounds interesting. Anyone know off hand if you need a referal from your MD of it will be coverend by your plan without that.

I originally got orthotics in 1978, hard plastic. They eventually wore out shortly after I retired in 2005. I tried a place on Montreal Road (555) but the measurement system they used did not seem that reliable and they seemed to be more interested in selling shoes than anything else. Also used a place in Orleans a few years ago but they have not lasted well ($450 +250 for a second pair). I believe that the "casting" approach works best and was hoping to find a place. This one sounds great, but I may try the Apple Saddlery route first.

I know that i need a prescription from my doctor for my plan to cover orthotics...i think the note is good for 3 years.
Been seeing Ryan at Solefit for over 10 years now...and have recommend many of my friends to him...all have been happy with his services. He used to work for Ottawa Orthotics Lab before venturing out on his own. I agree...casting is the way to go. What's great about Solefit is they make their orthotics on site...so if you need adjustments its easily done while you wait.

Mike Gibson at the Wellness Group in Kanata. He is my chiropractor and also does orthitics. He will take a mold of your foot and then order the orthitics based on the mold. I also have been wearing orthitics for the last twenty years. I remember going to a place on Carling Ave when I was a kid and had a German lady basically cast my foot to make a mold for them. They use to be big and solid plastic. The new ones have more flexion and are very comfortable. 613 271 8555 . http://www.mykanatachiropractor.com/...tic/orthotics/

It depends on why you are getting them made. Going to a specialist will allow you to get an idea of why you are having foot problems ( mechanics , injuries etc) . I suffer from plantar fasciitis , heel spurs and bunions so seeing a specialist is a must for me.

I have had 3 pairs made in the past 8 years
    Foot Solutions - don't bother
Feet Docs - Dr Greenberg , he does x-rays , gait analysis , casting mold of the foot, ( he is a podiatrist ) very thorough but not cheap. I think you need a doctors referal
BioPed- Hazledean location , very happy with the product ~450 , Pedorthist: Jeff Moustgaard

I haven't tried it yes, but the Dr. Sholl's foot orthodics machine is now set up at Costco on Innes. These would be a little more generic than ones made specifically for your foot, but there are quite a few options and one may suit you. And for $50 or so it's cheaper than real ones.

Not meaning to hi-jack this thread (really informative) but I had an interesting conversation yesterday with one of the chaps that run Sports 4 (not an ad) on Bank St. I was in for my semi-annual shoe purchase and he questioned me on my orthotics, specifically how long I had them and why I needed them. Told him my story (too long for now) and he basically asked why I felt I still needed them. I could not give him an answer. Got me to thinking about going for a re-evaluation by a foot dr. (podiatrist?) and see if there is the need now, some 33 years after I first got them. Perhaps, like most things in life, technology and knowledge in the medical field has changed. lCan I manage with insoles or perhaps arch supports only. Would be great if I did not need them any more and could put on shoes without searching for which pair they were in last. Thoughts...?

according to many drs you have to re-assess every 2yrs, because they tend to wear down. Definitely if you had them for the longest times your feet are used to them so once you stop wearing them you might feel pain for compensating on different areas of your body (back, hips, shins etc..). For a lot of people using regular gel ortho that you find in a lot of sport stores are just fine, but whoever has arc problems might be better to look into a custom ones that can fix any issues with feet.

I am no Dr. so I do recommend to ask first if you need some. I can't remember which place doesn't charge you for doing the assessment did it couple of years ago. But for sure try the gel one that might just solve the problem and you don't have to dish 400+ dollars.

you may not notice a huge difference when wearing good orthotics ,it is when you aren't wearing them that you notice the difference. Take this challenge , if you wear orthotics or good in-soles try golfing w/o them. I'll bet your balance is not as good and your feet ache either before the round is over or as soon as you take your shoes off , especially if you walk and carry. Not saying the $400 type are needed by everyone , depends on your situation i.e whether you need them because of injury / poor mechanics or if it strictly comfort go for the less expensive ,that way you can try a few different makes and models. Less of a hassle when you have more than one pair too because you don't have to worry about interchanging them between shoes.

Went to see my MD the other day and asked for a referral to a Podiatrist to get an assessment. Didn't get one (yet) and she had me do some walking about with and without shoes. Noted some "issue" with one foot. I'm looking for someone that is a professional in diagnosing foot issues. Am I right in thinking this is a Podiatrist (not an MD and may be why my MD did not refer), or do I go to a Sports Medicine Clinic and speak to someone there. I know if I go to an "orthotics" place they'll just recommend I get some new ones. Have not been "assesssed" since 1978 so things may have changed.

I've been using House of Kraft (Prince of Wales/Fisher) for several years. Great place and great orthotics. I did not need a doctor referral for my plan so i guess it depends on the plan.
