i used it for just tracking stats and scoring and its pretty good, but there is also golfcard pro which is another good one, but costs a little bit. A decent free one that I found is called Golf Shot and it does that stats thing and everything as well.

I used to use golf card pro but switched over to OOBGolf. It is a good free app for tracking stats.

Short answer 'No'.
It only requires a little bit of data to download the Google map satellite imagery to your phone, which is not much. If you were concerned about it using too much data (which it doesn't) just download the satellite imagery to your phone via wi-fi before you go play. After that it does not use data while you play.

I am using Golfshot GPS and been compared with other's GPS equipments, and this app is pretty accurate. I compared this with other iPhone's free app (Golf Logics) and this Golfshot GPS was lot more accurate. This one you have to pay or free on jailbroken iPhones....
This app also keeps all your scores with detailed rounding memos.

true, maybe try closing the app completely and then relaunching it. Never seen it do that before.

I've been using Golf LOgix for a while now and I like it. It's free, the yardages are decent and I like the way they send you the scorecard via e-mail after each round with all the stats, this way it's easy to save them in an e-mail folder!

I've used droid golf, golfcard, golfshots, golflogix (free) and I found that droid golf had a lot of the courses the others didnt and it was very accurate

Doesn't the phone use date to get the ranges? I'm confused b/c I think it does use alot of data! So, if I pull up the course on golf logix before I go to the actual course at home with wi-fi then it won't use any data while I'm there pulling up my ranges? thanx

Most smart phones today use what they call assisted GPS (A-GPS), meaning they have a GPS chip inside them to get position fix of the phone with the assistance of cell tower triangulation (this is how we get the ranges with Golfshot, Golf Logix, etc). They use the cell tower triangulation for assistance because the GPS chip inside a smart phone is not a dedicated GPS unit and thereby is not as accurate. When your smart phone is on it is always 'talking with' roaming cell towers without using data per say and thus not using data to obtain the assistance through triangulation. Therefore, you are not using data while on the course if you download the maps beforehand via wi-fi. Also, as I said earlier in this thread, downloading the maps through your data plan of you cell phone incurs very little data usage anyways. Nothing to worry about!

It's not a GPS app but another app I have been using is Gamebook (only available on the iPhone I think). It's a live leaderboard. If you golf with large groups of friends, it's great. As scores get entered into the phone, it provides a real-time, handicap adjusted leaderboard.
I've used it three times. It works flawlessly. For $1.99, you can't go wrong.
