    Rain Jacket recommendations?

Is gore tex the best way to go if I want to play on a cold rainy windy day?

I've seen some Galvin Green jackets that can cost $500. Not sure I want to spend that much on a jacket, but since we get a lot of rain I need to get something.

Nike has good jackets too I heard.

    Any recommendations? Thanks.

Are you going anywhere near Kingston in the next short while? The Adidas outlet store has some great deals on waterproof Climastorm jackets for golfing in. These are windbreaker type jackets but they breath. I don't know what they are worth now, but they were 50% off when I picked one up this spring.

The SunIce goretex jackets are great, and often go on great sales at GolfTown in the early winter.

I am a big fan of SunIce but anything GoreTex is the way to go. Anything less and you'll be wishing you bought GoreTex.
I got a fever. And the only prescription is more golf equipment.

or try ebay - prices are generally 1/3 of what you would pay at GolfTown.

Really? I paid $140 for a $350 jacket this winter, thought it was a pretty good deal. I'll look at ebay for sure next time.

That's the one I have. Best rain/wind jacket I've ever had. Almost feels like you have nothing on.

I'd love to find a jacket that I could take snowboarding in the winter. It would probably have to have a high waterproof rating though.

The gore tex shells are just that, not an ounce of insulation in them but great against the wind/rain. You'd need some serious cold weather gear but it is doable.

I ski 40+ days a season and use a gore-tex shell, but I would never want to golf in it. The same as I would never want to use my golf shell to ski in. Even though it's gore-tex, you're still getting a thicker, more durable fabric on the winter shell compared to the summer/fall shell.

it is not the best looking jacket but i does a great job of keeping me dry. i have played in the rain 7 times and everytime i do not have a drop of rain on me. last time i went out it was 40 and coming down and all i had on was the jacket and a light shirt and rain pants and i was fine.

I agree with Spackler, using the same jacket for golf is skiing is not a good idea. As with any compromise, you'll be getting a jacket that's not very good for either sport.

I haven't looked it up, but I thought the patent had expired on "GoreTex" and now there are a myriad of equivalent water repellant and waterproof fabrics, and that goretex is now just a brand name only?

I love my sunice tornado jacket, and for its 1st 2 years of heavy use it was completely water repellant, and just as important felt like I was hardly wearing anything when I golfed in it.

From what i've gathered, none of them remain waterproof for ever.

In 2005 bought a FJ jacket and pants. Played in a heavy rain storm that day at The Pearl East. Everything the suit covered was dry. Have only used it sparingly since, but has retained it's waterproof qualities as far as I can tell. Thin lining in the jacket so it doubles as a cool weather jacket. Very comfortable to wear. Picked it up at one of the discount places (Martin's?)for $200 US. Here the pants alone would cost that. Great deal.

"Now that the main Gore-Tex patent has expired, there are several other products on the market with similar characteristics that use similar technology." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gore-Tex )
I had a chance to visit Gore Industries in Elkton MD in 2001. Amazing place, and not only is their product top of the line, their whole operation is leading edge when it comes to technology and company organization. They have "repeatedly been named among the "100 Best Companies to Work For," in the U.S. by FORTUNE magazine." . They are still in operation, not just a brand name, under the name W.L. Gore & Associates in Delaware, with manufacturing facilities around the world.

GoreTex should be washed periodically to maintain its waterproofness. I have an 18 year old Sierra Designs GoreTex jacket that is still waterproof and its seen a lot of rain.

not very often, I'd say once a season if you don't use it much. If you are wearing it every day then I'd probably do it every couple of weeks. Check the instructions on the jacket. here's some general info

I got an Adidas Windbreaker/Jacket while in Florida, I think its the Clima-Control version, half zipper...Paid 40$ at the outlet and I played the last 2 saturdays in pouring rain and fairly cold weather and I was bone dry and even a little hot. For 40$, I could'nt ask for a better jacket.
