I have defended the NHL's suspensions a lot recently. This, I don't get. This is a textbook version of a blindside hit to the head. Should definitely have been a suspension. Not necessarily a big one (he wasn't hurt, and the hit was in an area that is recognized as one where players have some responsibility to protect themselves), but a suspension nonetheless. I am baffled.

After careful consideration, Chris Kunitz has been suspended for 1 game for his actions on Simon Gagne. In reviewing this play, we also took into consideration that it's the playoffs.

More and more, the NHL is a garage league.

After seeing this hit 10+ times, I don’t think it’s suspension worthy. The puck was at his stick and he had a couple of seconds to look around him before the puck got to him. Normally when the puck is going behind the net like that the D will take a quick look for available players for a transition play. This will also bring up a flag on potential danger. Seabrook was focused on the puck an nothing else.

This is no different then receiving a suicide pass down le middle and getting nailed by the pinching D. It was at worst a charging call but a clean shoulder hit it was. Two years ago this would have been just a great hit. There was no high elbow on the play.

The Kunitz elbow was deliberate and should have been more then 1 game IMO.

It’s unfortunate to see all these issues in the NHL these passed 2-3 years. The NHL don’t see to have a protocol setup of this.
