Bad course management 101
Just watched Kevin Na butcher the 9th hole.
Tee shot into the forest. Evaluates the situation and takes an unplayable and heads back to the tee. So far so good.
Hits #3 back into the same forest. Oops. This is where the brain disconnects.
Hits a provisional off the tee. Turns out this doesn't matter, since they find #3 in the forest. Now it gets interesting.
He gets to the ball lying 4 in the forest and instead of going back to the tee, remember this is the same crappy forest he was in before, decides to hack it out.
The ball hits something, bounces off him, and ends up behind him. He takes an unplayable from the ball that is now lying 6 (they think) and advances that a few yards. A few more hacks and eventually it's out of the forest.
He ended up with a 16 on the hole. They must have counted on the tape because walking up the fairway he did not know how many strokes he took.
To his credit, he did manage three birdies after that. Not fat anymore. Need to get better at golf now!

What I don't understand is why they put all those rocks in the forest, as well as in many other areas? They're not red-staked, so it seems like a really harsh penalty...

I was watching golf channel and they said he scored 15, anyway, I'd love to see the highlights of that hole. Worst I've ever done was an 8 or 9. What the heck was he thinking????
To his credit, he played well after that hole.

Link to the video is on the front page on PGATour.com
He was mic'd up, and I love the comment he made when he finally got out... "How are we going to count this up, I don't even know what I'm at?"Let's put a Smile on that Face!

From TSN.ca/golf:
"Ray Ainsley took 19 shots on the par-4 16th hole at Cherry Hills in the 1938 U.S. Open."

Hey, even the greats arent immune from high scores. Jack Nicklaus had a 10 on #14 at St. Andrews in 2000, and there wasn't a tree for miles.
When applying the Rules, you follow them line by line. You don't read between them.

BTW - Kudos to Na for not giving up. He still managed to shoot 80. I can pretty much guarantee that no one else here could pull that off after carding a 16...
