Well I've gone over to the dark side and re-gripped my own clubs for the very first time last night.

I can see this becoming an addictive (and somewhat expensive) hobby. Not the re-gripping part, that went fairly easy with one lost grip, not enough solvent, in the course of re-gripping 17 clubs, but the whole club-making thing. I went into Golfworks the other day and it was like being possessed. Ii was checking out heads, shafts, and all of the tools.

My wife will be so happy...

She's away so I got away with it this time. Low odour varsol works also does it?

Low odour varsol works. Some folks use mineral spirits(available at Canadian Tire) but yesterday while in the store I had a sniff of both :jitter and low odour varsol definitely smells less. Gas works also and so does paint thinner but holy smokes is the smell ever strong

You are lost forever. I type this after just opening up my Golfsmith box that arrived in the mail today.

I'll be swingweighting and epoxying up the new irons tonight. Once those are done I'll be disassembling the old irons and matching the two sets SW-wise so that I can properly evaluate the differences in the two sets of shafts (Tour Flighted 5.5 Rifles vs. Air Rifles -S)

Iron heads are both Golfsmith Tour Cavity Forged. If there hadn't been such a good deal on them earlier this year the second set would be Wishon 550Cs.

Oh yeah...

A buddy of mine was asking why I would spend a couple of hours regripping a set of clubs when it would be easier, cheaper (if you count my time) and cleaner to get someone else to do them. I told him that half the fun was getting your hands dirty and producing something that I will use. Plus I don't have to drop my clubs off and either wait or pick them up another time. That takes time also!

After a while you will do this in no time.

I was only about 10 minutes a club, so I wasn't unhappy with the time. Most of the time I spent cutting the old grip off and getting rid of the old tape.

Now a lot of times, the old grip came off and left the tape looking pretty good, except for the line of the knife cut. Could I have re-used the tape? Everything I read on the Internet said to remove the tape, so I blindly did. That way I knew that the tape was good anyways.

You could use the old tape but I prefer to use new tape and remove the old one. The old one does not have any stickiness left. Of course some clubmakers don't even use grip tape and blow them right on. I would rather be safe than sorry though and would not want the grip twisting in my hands while swinging.If you want to save a little time and your fingers next time get something like this:

Now if you don't want to invest a fortune you could buy this to remove grips when you want to save them or when you run into a problem like you did by not applying enough solvent http://www.golfworks.com/item_disp.asp?pn=VGGR One guy on the FGI forum built one out of piano wire. I am going to look it up and see if I can post it. Another solution to remove grips is the old seringe but a bit pricey and to be handled with care. Anytime. One last thing when removing old grips. See if you can get a hook blade. Great for removing grips and removing dirt from your clubs' grooves.

I got one of those when I was getting set up at Golfworks.

Golfworks actually had a cool kit that included the tape tool, but I just bought the basics.

Then you will buy some equipment. (Some good vice grips)
Next, you will assemble your first club.
Then buy some more equipment. (A club length measuring tool)
Build an iron.
Then buy some more equipment. (A swingweight machine)
A set or irons.
Then buy some more equipment. ( A shaft extractor)
Regrips some clubs for a friend.
Then buy some more equipment. (A frequency analyser)
A set of woods.
Then buy some more equipment. (Build a workshop)
Build an NF2 or NF4.

You're hooked already.

Gotta agree with this - my experience in {red} below...

First it's a few grips. {yup}
Then you will buy some equipment. (Some good vice grips) {and a knife with a hook blade, and a small wire brush for epoxy removel, and, and, and...}
Next, you will assemble your first club. {yup - I started by reshafting a couple of old irons that I broke and built a putter}
Then buy some more equipment. (A club length measuring tool) {not yet but I have a grip guage}
Build an iron. {I skipped this step and reshafted some irons, shortened a putter and extended a couple of shafts in woods}
Then buy some more equipment. (A swingweight machine) {yup - and some lead tape to fine tune things, and a tape removal tool, and some impact tape, and, and, and,...}
A set or irons. {not that ambitious yet }
Then buy some more equipment. ( A shaft extractor) {yup, but I just bought a cheap one}
Regrips some clubs for a friend. {yup}
Then buy some more equipment. (A frequency analyser) {for the real enthusiast!}
A set of woods. {not a set yet but a few specialty clubs -> 4-wood, 7+ wood}
Then buy some more equipment. (Build a workshop) {or add on to your existing multipurpose basement workshop}
Build an NF2 or NF4.

The kit is well worth it. For the price of the tape removal tool itself you get the utility knife and a whack of blades, solvent, tape, and their "Ultimate Grip Installer Tool" (which I have never used.....)

You'll probably never have to use it unless reshafting a Taylor Made Bubble or big butt shafts.
