    Nature Shots...
My grand-daughter has just discovered birds. Though I'd send along some shots of them feeding but find either they move too fast or I don't have the right setting for the camera (Canon PowerShot S5 IS). Tried changing the timing from 1/100 to something faster but then the shots were very dark. Is there another option, or am I too limited with my current equipment? Thanks.

For moving birds, you're in tough with a point and shoot, even a high end one like the S5. Especially if you're zoomed in on the birds (I think the max focal length is over 400mm on that camera?) you will need a very high shutter speed, 1/1000 minimum, 1/1500+ even better. If the pictures are coming too dark and you're in the shutter priority mode (if you're in manual, you need to open the aperture up), that just means that the camera lens can't gather enough light in that situation. Another concern is that because the camera is so light, you will also need excellent shooting technique (to keep the camera perfectly still) if you are taking the pictures while hand holding the camera at that kind of focal range (even with IS). Finally, the focusing capabilities of the camera make it tough to maintain focus on a moving object at that range.

All that said, if you keep those things in mind, you can still have a go at it.

-Try to take pictures in the daylight if possible, the stronger the better.
-Keep as steady as you can while taking the pictures. If possible even place the camera on a solid object like a deck rail or chair while taking pictures.
-Try to limit the pictures to situations where the birds aren't moving around a lot. Taking pictures of birds feeding is a great subject as they're usually staying within the frame and you don't have to move the camera too much too track them.
-Finally, just take lots and lots of pictures. The great thing about digital photography is that film is cheap, and so is the process of trial and error. Even if most of the pictures don't work out, maybe you'll get 2 or 3 out of 100 that do.

Thanks spackler. I was shooting them as they fed from our feeders, but still they are very fidgety, so there is some bluring. I was using a tri-pod, but a light one. Did it indoors, through open patio door, first, then on the deck which gave a little more stability. There is still some "flex" and if/when I get a better camera I'll invest in some sort of remote or cable system as the camera does move as I am pressing the button. I'll try cranking up the speed, but will have to wait for a sunny day for that. Not sure about focul length, lens says 6.0 - 72.0 mm, but that's not related, right? The specs say I have 15 - 1/3200 sec range, and I'll have to learn how to set the aperture. Just read about it quickly in the manual... who knew?

I shot this using a Canon SD900Ti point and shoot in Barbados last October. I thought it was a cool shot. You can actually see the haze of the humidity across the shot as it was something like 48*C that day with the humidex.

I didn't bring the D90 along, as the kid, his pack and play, two duffle bags of scuba gear and my wife's clothes took up all the room.

That said, this shot turned out OK.

Experimenting yesterday, I found that there is a limit to how much you can over/under expose images on purpose. I was trying to get the sun reflecting off the clouds, looking out the spare bedroom window. I underexposed the shot by 2.7 stops on purpose. The result was a super noisy picture (400 ISO). I guess I was way below the "operating range" of the sensor.

Here is a picture closer to proper exposure, which was then post processed, to darken the image.

So, Spackler and I have been discussing the noise I saw in my underexposed shot.So I thought I would post up the three pictures I took, and their setting, so we can keep this thread going. Maybe I will learn something!
For all three shots, I used my Nikon D90 equipped with a Tokina 12-24, shot in Vivid mode, at ISO400.

    Shot #1:f4.5, 1/80sec,0.00eV,22mm
    Shot #2:f6.3, 1/160sec, -0.67eV,24mm
    Shot #3:f7.1, 1/200sec, -0.67eV, 12mm

The end result I posted earlier was photo #1, with some brigthness and contrast enhancement at post processing. Photo #3 was the one I was interested in, which had a lot of noise.

This is an article written in 1944 on the post-war future of photography. It is interesting to see what was predicted and, with hindsight, realize what has come to pass since that time.

Nice photos. I want to play that course next time I go back to Vegas. I've been 3 times, and still have yet to golf in Vegas! How was the hole in pic #4? I remember that hole from big break I think!

IIRC, that's the 1st hole - if so, it's not as intimidating as it appears, the fairway's a mile wide (great view though!)

Make the trip! it's well worth it

The fairway seems to narrow with a high wind blowing into your face (says me, who went 5 off the first tee).

Awesome course though, and Lance took some great pics when we were there. Absolute hardest track I've ever played.
