Here's a series of pictures I took back in 2005 while in wales on a 4MP Canon G2 with the stock lens (which is still running strong!)
http://www.flickr.com/photos/5678805...7626109770354/
Haven't gotten around to organizing them, or removing the weaker pics. It's a series of landscapes, castles, abbeys, with a couple pics of the Celtic Manor @ the end. Once I track down the originals, I'll upload more to the set ... currently only ~55 pics (of 200)
I've since upgraded to a Canon Rebel XTi, with a couple of nice lenses ... I'll upload a set from that camera sometime soon (just signed up for Flickr!)
A couple from the Flickr stream:

I bought Cannon T2i w/18-55 kit lens and a 55-250 lens for Xmas, and both me and my wife are having lots of fun learning to use it. Nothing spectacular so far, but still much better than our old point-and-shoot.
Here're a couple from our trip to Jamaica this winter.

Wow!
These are some really cool shots with people with good eyes.
Last year, I bought a Canon G10 and began to take pictures in anything other than the automatic mode for the first time. After about a year, I have just recently decided to move to a DSLR and see if I can play around and learn to take better pictures. So, a couple of weeks ago I bought a Canon 450D with an 18-55mm kit lens and bought a couple of extra lenses (50mm F1.8 and 55-250mm IS F4-F5.6).
Here are a couple of pictures I took with the old G10 with some mild post processing.Last edited by rezadue; 02-27-2011 at 07:12 PM.

Canon
Said when I retired that I'd get into photography, but five years on have not... yet. Just bought my daughter's old Canon PowerShot S5 IS and playing with it. Amazing what can be done with this minor upgrade over the regular digital pocket cameras. Although only 8 MP the clarity is significantly greater than by Olympus 6.0. Looking for some basic tips regarding lighting (on or off, no options?) and composition (background, again relating to lighting). Anyone suggest a good web site or forum? I found the Canon forum, but any other suggestions? Not sure I have the patience to sit through one of those night school programs, but if there is one highly recommended then I'd give it a try...Thanks!

I just got into the DLSR, and picked up a Nikon D3000 with a 18-200mm VR lens. I need to take a lesson at Henry's in order to take better pictures, and learn everything that the camera can do.

Thanks Michael. I bought it for the trip to China, need to start practicing with it and trying different things with it.
People on this thread have taken some awesome photos. I will need to post a few myself.

Well, I could not help myself. Between my weak will and Spackler's suggestions I sold the Canon XSi and bought a Nikon D90. Wow, what a nice camera. I have only had the D90 for 2 days not and have not had a chance to play much, but that will change.
Here is one of the first pictures I snapped with it.Proud member of the 2009 Ryder Cup winning team

Anyone have/use Manfrotto tri-pods? Are they really worth the high price?
Sorry if this isn't the correct thread.

Manfrotto are excellent. Solid as a rock, durable and lightweight. They are what the pros use.

Here are my 2 purchases for this season !! They didn't have the dynamic gold shafts in them, but they had a customer order in the office (which the guy didn't want) with Project X 6.0 w/ golf pride grips ! Hit them once at Kevin Haime since purchase and I love them so far.

I find myself intested in night photograpohy and was wondering what type of lens is recommened for something like this, keeping in mind that I currently have a Nikon D90 with 18-55VR and 50mm F1.8 lenses. I have been flip flopping betweek buying an 18-200mm VR and a 70-300mm VR.

Reza,
You already have the 18-55VR, I'd get the 70-300 VR if I were you. If you upgrade to anything like a D700 in the future, the 70-300VR will be compatible as well. Also, for about $600, not many other options are available that are as good as that lens and will give you up to 300mm. Granted, the 70mm isn't a great focal length for landscape type of shots, but it's a solid lens for virtually anything else you could want to do with it.
For your night photography, if you're doing a lot of landscapes, you might want to look at the Sigma 10-20mm f3.5 or the slightly cheaper Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6. The benefit to the f3.5 version is that it's newer, and will allow for faster shutter speeds throughout the full focal range. I haven't read many reviews on the f3.5, but I know it exists lol.
I probably wouldn't get the 18-200 VR, since you already have a lens that covers part of that focal length, and you wouldn't be able to sell the 18-55VR for much to absorb the cost. You could also look at the Nikon 35 f1.8 (~$250-300), Nikon 35 f2 (~$400), Sigma 30 f1.4 (~$450) or Nikon 17-55 f2.8 (~$1400) which all are fast in low light and wide angle enough to be useable in landscape photography.
Enough preaching, go spending! lol

Thanks for the info Scott. In truth, I doubt I will ever go full frame. Having said that I came upon this site and did a comparison of the 70-300 to the 18-200 which would seem to show that 18-200 to be sharper throughout the common range (albeit shot on a D3X).
http://www.the-digital-picture.com/R...o.x=10&Go.y=11
Then I started to look and it seemed like the 16-85 to be quite a bit sharper than the 18-200 throughout their common focal lengths too!
Second hand minte 18-200s can be had for around $500, while the 70-300mm seem to go for around $350.
Then there is the handiness of just walking around with an 18-200 around and not have to change lenses often!!!
So confused. I have lens purchase paralysis.Proud member of the 2009 Ryder Cup winning team

Hey Reza,
That is the reason I bought a 18-200mm lens, got tired of changing lenses, and it was just easier to have one lens in the camera for most shots...You may miss a shot if you have to change the lens...

You upgrade the camera body (read: have two) so you don't need to change lenses! That's what I'm planning on lol.
I have an 18-200 VRI, and it is handy, but my 50 1.8 and 105 f2.8 Macro are miles sharper. It's not necessarily a knock on my individual copy of the 18-200 as much as it is on any lens that is a 10x zoom. You can't expect perfection in every shot. I have been thinking about selling the 18-200 to fund other desires (possibly 17-55 as I find I take a lot of shots in that range).
The one advantage the 18-200 VR would have over your 18-55 VR right now, is that you'll gain almost one half stop of light at the 55mm focal length.
For example:
18-55 VR 3.5-5.6 @ 55 is f5.6
18-200 VR 3.5-5.6 @ 55 is about f4.8
It's not huge, but you'll have a slightly faster shutter speed at 55mm.Twitter: @Scott_Fally

The 17-55 is an incredible lens if you're sticking with DX Scott, and it's a good range too. I keep my 28-70 on the camera most of the time (18-46ish DX equivalent) and it serves me well.

It's a great lens. But I can't pull the trigger due to being unsure of whether I will venture forward with FX or stick with DX. I'm tempted by the D700 or D300s. Ideally, the D400 (or whatever the next upgrade is in the DX line) will have better ISO capabilities and I'll be able to save some serious money on lenses.
The Beast (28-70) is a beauty apparently, and you're fortunate to have the body/lens you have now! No, I'm not jealous...not me...Twitter: @Scott_Fally

Well, sometimes when you sit on the fence long enough, your decision become easier. So now I own a 70-300 VR.
Nest step (long term), a 16-85 and eventually a Sigma 8-16.

I owe you BIG time! Today is day 30 since I purchased my 70-300 at Best Buy here in Windsor. I just printed off the ad from Aden and called Best Buy and if I go in tomorrow they will verify that it is still on sale and in stock (the website says it is) and they will refund me the difference ($90). Sweet!
That makes it even easier for me to justify going and buying a new laser range finder on the weekend.
