Graeme McDowell edges Tiger Woods in sudden-death playoff at Chevron golf event

As Graeme McDowell set up to putt for birdie on the final hole in regulation at the Chevron World Challenge, the NBC camera framed Tiger Woods’ caddie in his civvies. Seems Steve Williams, with Woods needing a kick-in for birdie and the win, figured his man had the tourney wrapped up and stripped off his caddie’s bib.

Not so fast. McDowell had other ideas. The 2010 U.S. Open champ canned a clutch 15-foot putt to send the tourney into extra innings. Another one from almost the same spot on the first sudden-death playoff hole capped a dramatic comeback for the chap from Northern Ireland and the first winless season in Woods’ 14-year career.

Woods entered Sunday with a four-shot cushion but lost his lead after two early three-putts and an atrocious double-bogey on the 13th. Despite a wobbly swing and tenuous putting, Tiger played his way back into a late-round tie, with a little help from McDowell, who incurred a one-stoke penalty after his tee shot on the par-3 17th found the waist-high fescue. McDowell opted to take an unplayable lie, hit his third shot from a ledge behind the roughage, and made an improbable bogey.

On the first hole of the overtime period, McDowell put all the pressure on Woods by draining just another ho-hum birdie -- his third on the 18th hole this week. Woods’ birdie try slid by the cup and McDowell closed it out where it all began for him when he subbed for Woods at the same tourney last December.

Keep your shirt on. Note to Stevie: Keep your shirt on next time, Bub.
