Winter Rules for Embedded Ball

I have been told that the winter rule for an embedded ball is that it can be lifted and redropped anywhere even if it is in a hazard. Any comments?

I have been told that the winter rule for an embedded ball is that it can be lifted and redropped anywhere even if it is in a hazard. Any comments?

If the local rule(winter rules or preferred lies) allows you to move the embedded ball in cut portion or fairway,(I know, I know), then you must drop the ball as near as possible to where the ball originally lay. This means that if the ball is embedded in the rough, then it must be played as it lies, because rough is not "closely mown area," which is an area of through the green that is cut to fairway height or less.

If winter rules applies to through the green(fairway and rough) then drop the ball as near as possible to where the ball originally lay.

Hazards are not part of through the green, however, occasionally the rules committee will allow golfers to prefer their lies there, as well.(Unfortunately)

"Winter Rules" or "preferred lies" means absolutely nothing on its own.

There should be a posting in the pro shop with the actual text of the Local Rule.
