    Mickelson leaving Titleist

    Hot off the press:

    http://www.golfweek.com/articles/200...news/40273.asp

Quite a coup for Callaway if he ends up signing with them.

Hard to believe Titleist would let him go, guess they just didn't want to pay the $$$$. Which seems weird after Phil winning the Masters and becoming even more marketable. Good for whoever signs him though.

Nike... wouldn't that be the most ironic turn of events. Like the article is pointing out, I think he's lining himself up for Callaway but what is interesting is that in 2 of his last 3 tournaments, he had Ping 3,4 and 5 G2 irons in his bag. Maybe he was just trying them on... But I don't see him going to a Ping bag though.

Looks like there will be some Callaway blades in the near future.

I did post this in another thread. It Seems Phil wanted to renegotiate his contract with titleist that was good through 2005. Kind of sounds like Alexei Yashin. Good on Titleist for trying to make Phil Honour his deal.

Callaway will probably pick him up. It appears they did get their superstar. They need a superstar on the PGA tour.

Not necessarily. Callaway also owns the Ben Hogan line, and many of their tour pros play Hogan Apex irons. Of course, a left-handed model is currently not available to the public - that will probably change!

I didn't see where Titleist did anything but let him go. I wonder if there was some sort of escape clause in the contract. I agree though, Phil should have stood up to his obligations. What's one more year?

As for Callaway blades, I'm not sure. Callaway is a member of the same family as the Ben Hogan line of clubs. I see Phil playing a set of Hogan irons, Callaway woods and wedges, and not sure about putter. Either Odyssey or one of the Bettinardi ones.

Forgot about that. Heck, he could even end up playing Top-Flite irons.

However, in the marketing world that is golf, I fully expect him to be playing Callaway branded clubs. Right now they've got Charles Howell and Annika as their marquee players. Annika is hard to beat on the women's side, but CH isn't close to Phil in terms of appeal.

I saw that today when I was looking for the $$$ the deal was worth. Leaving a $4 million deal, plus incentives, the deal with Callaway should be worth a pretty penny.
