    Rules contest

I have a question about last weeks rules contest:

"The position of Amber’s ball is marked and the ball is lifted from the putting green by fellow-competitor Shannon’s caddie. Does Shannon incur a penalty?

No: Shannon incurs no penalty and her caddie may replace Amber’s ball."

Rule 20-1 states that the ball may be lifted by the player, his caddie or a person authorized by the player. The penalty for breach of this rule is 1 stroke according to decision 20-1/2. Since the contest does not state that Amber authorized Shannon's caddie to lift her ball, I believe that Shannon should be penalized.

    cheers,

    Kris

    Oh gawd not again....

I should have checked the decisions, but I thought the source I was using for questions was a good one. That is twice recently I have had wrong answer, and you have picked up on it. Good work.

I will find another source of questions (and check the answers).
    Sorry folks.

    True.

    False.

Decision 20-1/2 is dealing with match play only (re: opponnent).
The contest question was dealing with stroke play. (re: fellow-competitor)

Even if Shannon's caddie lifted the ball without authorization from Amber, there is no penalty to anyone.

In stroke play, EVERYONE (other than Amber's caddie) is an outside agency to Amber.

Rule 18. Ball at Rest Moved
    18-1. By Outside Agency
If a ball at rest is moved by an outside agency, there is no penalty and the ball must be replaced.

For the bazillionth time: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE STAY OUT OF THE DECISION BOOK.

    P.S. Dan - No worries.

I was starting to wonder, as I said I was pretty sure of the source of that question.

Thanks for clearing that up Gary.

But I LOVE the decision book... I've already read the rules book a couple times... Now the decision book keeps me warm at night.

    cheers,

    Kris
