    Swing Speed vs Shaft Flex

    Hey guys,

I've recently come to the conclusion that my 'R' flex shaft is too active through impact and is causing too many wayward drives. The shaft in question is a UST V2 75g R flex shaft with 2.2 torque.

I'm looking at actually replacing the whole club as it's 5 years old any ways, but my question is surrounding the shaft itself.

What are people's general consensus on what shafts are suitable for what swing speeds?

How much does tempo play a role, and how does bend point and tip stiffness affect the overall shaft flex?

    Thanks!

You know the old saying, "one man's trash is another man's treasure?" It's the same with shafts. It's extremely difficult to quantify what shaft is right for your swing.

Two golfers can have the same swing speed, ball speed, spin, etc., but use two completely different shaft profiles.

    The Short Answer

If you like the V2 feel, move up one flex.

    The Long Answer

Trial and error. Try to find something that works for you by trying out different shafts. This could equal a lot of time and money though.

    The Smart Answer

Take the time to get properly fitted by a qualified club maker.
When applying the Rules, you follow them line by line. You don't read between them.

Whats your clubhead speed? If its under 90, stick with R. Rather than flex, length of the shaft is crucial. Try 44.5 or 44 inch drivers and see what happens. Key is finding a clubmaker who can build it short and maintain the correct flex and swingweight

If you're going to go this route I would recommend Artisan golf in Kanata.

I got my clubs made there, and ended up getting Accra shafts which I really like.

The question of flex has a flexible anwser!! Really since there seems to be no steady standard as to what constitutes the R rating then seeing a club fitter is the best route or be ready to experiment for years, trial and error is not efficient. I experimented and when I was actually fitted I found that my set-up was not even close to what the fitter recommended.

This might have been posted here before. It does make a good point.

    Trail and error does work.

I have seen this video on many occasions. It is not only about shaft flex it is also about shaft weight. The only things the video does not mention is shaft length and balance point or centre of mass.

See what happens to a baseball bat(aluminum vs wood) of the same weight or even more when the balance point is shifted.Of course the COR plays a role in the equation but the aluminum bat can be swung faster because the BP is closer to the hand.Perhaps it is one of the reason why counterweighting works for some golfers.

    Thumbs up

Balance point is very important. Tom Wishon agrees with you there. The way you determine where the balance point should be is the key in my opinion. Eric Cook had an excellent formula to determine this.
