    Relief Distance

I know that you get to take two club lengths for relief from objects and hazards and so forth. The question I had was that what is the length you can take for "two club lengths"? I use my driver mainly, but I was playing with a group the other day and the guy pulls out his 5 foot long belly putter. What is the ruling on that? Also where does this end? I'll carry around a 10 foot pole with a putter head on the end if it means I can take 20 feet of relief!

Any legal club in the bag is OK.

Free relief = 1 club length
Penalty drop = 2 club lengths

So two from a lateral hazard, but only one from an immovable obstruction.
Life dinnae come wit gimmies so yuv got nae chance o' gitt'n any from me.

It might be worth getting a Rules Book

The Rule Book does not have a maximum length for putters:

The overall length of the club must be at least 18 inches (0.457 m) and, except for putters, must not exceed 48 inches (1.219 m).

So where in the Rule of Golf does it say you can't have a 10 foot putter in your bag just for measuring relief?

My observation was re the statement "I know that you get to take two club lengths for relief from objects and hazards and so forth."

And the fact the book does not specify a limit for putters means there is no limit.

Ahhh, I thought you were talking about the "10 foot pole" comment.
