    The scoop on rangefinders please...

Okay, been hearing a lot of the benefits of a rangefinder. GPS is often off by several yards.

As someone who knows nothing about them I need to know what to look for. I don't think I need the full scale top of the line one, right? What's a great value for one? I assume I want a laser, right? I've already been fixed so I'm not worried about the laser killing my swimmers. Any and all advice would be helpful lads.

Since you don't want the top of the line one, this is the one you want.

    http://www.golftown.com/gtcommerce/s...P8598C562.aspx

It will hit every pin from 200 yards and in very reliably and most over 200 if you are even remotely steady handed.

Whatever model you decide to buy Donny, get it on ebay and save half of what GT is asking. These rangefinders are sooo overpriced, golfers are getting gouged.

the bushnell v2 is the same as the bushnell scout 1000. while the V2 is selling between $250 and $300 on ebay, the scout 1000 sells for less than $200. And they come in a sweet camo color.

7 hours left on this auction, guy selling is in quebec, do it Donny!

I've been using a Leupold for the past two years. I have the pretty straight forward one ,no slope,no temp. etc.. Our course has been selling the GolfBudy and I compare it with some other members and I am bang on everytime. Simple to operate, point and click, acurate to within a yard.Never used a Bushnell so cant compare. I can get over 250 yrds with mine, not that I need it. I also use it to look at the group ahead and figure how far they are before hitting a shot.Woth looking into.

All the rangefinder fan boys have come out in this thread lol. What's wrong with GPS's? When you say off by several yards, do you mean like 2-3? Or more like 10?
I really like my GPS because it gives me yardages to water, bunkers, end of fairways, etc. Things you often cannot see with a rangefinder.
But if you're completely set on buying a rangefinder, I won't argue as they're definitely useful for pinpointing an exact location.

I love it when they do that! Weeds out the fly-by-nighters, leaves it for the serious bidders only.

you can go to auctionsniper.com, for a small fee they will bid on the item for you with 5 seconds left. Its all automated. The annoying thing is, you set it up to bid and then you check ebay to see if you won and you didn't win AND the bid is less than what your max bid was. you log onto auctionsniper and it says "seller does not ship to your location" or something like that because we are in canada. very annoying. but other than that, great site for late auctions.

my selling secret is, start on a thursday and end the auction at 9pm est and do a 10 day auction. that way the auction ends on a sunday at 9pm est or 6pm pst AND you got 4 weekend days out of it lots of people following your item.

    Range finder

My neighbour who deer hunts as well as golfs just purchased a range finder at Le Baron for 149$. If you point it at something and push the button it gives an exact distance. Its not designed for golf more for hunting...but who cares!! We played at Grey Hawk yesterday and the thing is BANG on!!.Just my 2cents worth.

Huge fan of rangefinders over GPS. I have the Bushnell V2 and have become very reliant on it. Beauty of the rangefinder over the GPS is that you can use it at the driving range (because the yardage they display is never accurate), and because it does give you an accurate reading to the flag, not just the front/middle/back of the green.

If you get one, and I highly recommend them, make sure you get an extra battery, because once you start using it you're hooked...and you don't want to be mid-round when your battery dies.

    Moving to the GPS camp.....

I've had a Bushnell Pinseeker 1500 for the last three years and was very pleased with it up to this season. When I bought it I chose it over a GPS because many of the courses in the Valley that I play were not mapped for GPS and many (most??) of the GPS units had additional fees associated to update the maps.

Lately I've been finding it virtually impossible to measure anything much over 100 yards or so. Apparently the laser can develop alignment issues over time that reduce the effective range of unit (when it was new I could easily scope a flag at over 300 yards (not that I needed to....).

I started looking at the GPSs again a few weeks ago and found that Golf Buddy had done a lot of mapping of Ottawa Valley courses (most of it very recent). I decided to give the GB Tour a try and got it earlier this week. I've only had a chance to try it once (at Pembroke). The accuracy was very good - I stood on the 200 and 100 yd markers on several holes (which I'd checked in the past with the laser) and the GPS read within 1 yd.

I found I liked being able to walk along with the GPS on my cart and just glance at it to find distances to the front, centre and back of the green before hitting my shot. A quick movement of the joystick gives me a list of hazards on the hole (bunkers, water etc) and I can add up to 11 more to the list for each hole. If I need to, I can move the pin position on the GPS to where I see the flag to get a pin distance. At my skill level, I'm quite happy to aim at the front or back half of the green based on the numbers presented to me and hope I hit what I aim for.

I like GPS over laser. I had a laser range finder and found it took longer and it's only good if you can see the flag. GPS has the yardage waiting for you when you get to your ball so you just grab your club and go, plus when you spray one out in left field you have the yardage. As mentioned you get yardage to bunkers and water too. The Bushnell Neo is great bang for buck, bought my Dad a new one off Ebay for $100 shipped.

    Obviously you're not a golfer.
