Driver Shaft vs. 3 Wood Shaft

I went to a fitting with the Callaway club van yesterday and we figured out that the Diamana Whiteboard 73 S was the best shaft for my driver. Now I have heard before that you should try to use the same shaft in your woods as in your driver. I am curious to know if this is a rule of thumb or just hear say? Are there certain aspects that make that true / not true or is it strictly depend on how I swing my 3-wood compared to my driver?

It's a rule of thumb.

The difference between today's driver and 3W in terms of length is so small that if a shaft works for you in one then it will likely work in the other.

From an assembly point of view most OEM shafts designed for driver are simply trimmed 1/2" or 1" when played in a 3W. Some shafts are designed to be trimmed from the butt only so that won't apply in those cases but it doesn't always mean you can't tip it.

Me, I play a different shaft in my 4W than my driver this season but only because I bought a new one that I wanted to try out. Up until this season I have always played the same model (and flex and weight) in driver and FWY.
