    Difficulty of Grip Replacement?

    Hey,

I am looking at picking up a couple itomic grips to try on my Driver, 3 wood and hybrid this spring. I thought Id try them and see if I like them and then if so, replace my irons as well.

I know I could just go to golfworks and have them do it, but assuming I wanted to try it, how difficult is it to remove old and install new grips? I was thinking of buying a grip kit and grips from golfsmith (as I will be around their retail location this weekend) or golfworks, and trying to do it myself, but would prefer not to destroy my clubs, or grips.

Is the kit the way to go?

Also,I have an L4V driver, I have heard that its not a good idea to use air to remove the grips as it tends to blow up the head?? has anyone experienced trouble with regripping the L4V?

    thanks

    ryan

Replacing your own grips is simple.

All you really need is a vise, shaft clamp (which comes in the kit0, and a knife. Make sure to get a hook blade knife so that you don't damage the graphite shafts.

lol, using a compressor will not blow up the head. It will save you a ton of time and allow you to change grips easier if you want to try different grips. Tape and solvent is stone age.

Darn right. I had one carbon crown blow off in my face. Here is what happened. The club had been reshafted by I don't know who. He probably drilled out the shaft and went through the stop. When he reshafted it he did not put a plug in there. So here I go with the compressor shooting air in the head not knowing so. Then holy comes the crown flying 2 inches from my face.

lol did that actually happen or is that a joke? If so how much pressure are you using? I only put it to around 40-50 psi and I have done a Callaway FT-5 which is a multi-piece construction without any problems. I'm no clubmaker like you guys but I put grips on and off all the time.

It did happen. I'll post a pic. It happened because there was no hosel plug and the carbon composite crown is very thin and glued on.

Replacing grip is a piece of cake. Been doing mine for years with no problem. The only time consuming part is taking the old tape off the shaft of the clubs to be re-gripped. The longer the old grip has been on, there is a tendency for the old tape to dry up and result in more work to get the old tape off.

Actually the're pretty lousy pics taken with a cell phone. And yes I was very lucky.
And fortunately the customer cut me some slack.

Tape and solvent may be old fashioned, but it is tried and true and pretty darn simple. I can do a whole set easily in under half an hour even if I take my time. However I do use the Brampton's wax-based grip tape activator instead of solvent in my basement workshop. The Brampton's is not flammable and has no smell. Also much easier on the hands!
I'm not sure if the latest Golfworks catalogue is the same as the old one, however for many years in their catalogue Golfworks had step by step instructions, complete with photos, on how to properly install grips. The first time I did a set of grips I put that article on the workbench beside me and followed it to the letter.... piece of cake.
I tried to find the Golfworks instructions online without success, however here is a pretty good step by step grip install article with photos:

    http://golf.about.com/od/golfclubsco...pgolfclubs.htm

As mentioned by some previous posters, usually the worst part is taking off the old grip tape. However if you heat up the old tape with a heat gun it is much easier to remove.

Do yourself a favor and practice with iron shafts. Starting with graphite....one slip or mistake can be costly. Irons just scratch. LOL

So leftygolfguy, did you try and install grips yourself?
    Obviously you're not a golfer.
