We are now TOP of the official medal table with a minimum of 2 more silvers to come (and that will hopefully be two more golds)...a fantastic performance

What's this 'top of the medal' standings? I've never seen a medal table that counts just gold medals. The USA is at the top of the medal count, big time.

The U.S. may have the most medals overall, but Canada definitely owns the TOP of the podium!
Silvers and bronzes are nice but winning is by far the most important thing.
In fact Canada and the U.S. are about the only countries which rate their standings by total medal count. The IOC and most other countries in the world consider the overall winner of the Olympics to be the country with the most GOLD medals. Wikipedia, for example has this note on their listing of all time Olympic medals won by country:
"sort by gold, silver, and then bronze (as used unofficially by the IOC and by most broadcasters outside the US)"
This Olympics has produced the most gold medals for Canada in it's history - summer or winter - as well as tying the record for the country with the most gold medals at any Winter Olympics. Canada also shattered the record for most gold medals by any country which has ever hosted the Winter Olympics.
By any athletic performance standards this Olympics has been a huge success for the host county. However I guess some people will never be satisfied...The opinions expressed in this post are mine and may not necessarily reflect the opinions of others on OG.

Reid... 100% in agreement.
Before the game the discussion was if we would win 1 gold medal as a host... Now we have 13 and some critics are still not happy...If you think it's hard to meet new people, try picking up the wrong golf ball.

It's not almost every country outside N. America that ranks medals golds first it is EVERY country and it is the only way the IOC ranks medals (since 1896) It's only unofficial IOC rankings because official IOC policy is NOT to rank medals. They release medal tables for "īnformation purposes only".
I believe (but I may be wrong) that the US used to rank medals this way too but changed it during the cold war to look better...and we followed.
But whatever way you slice it a great performance by Canada

As good as we've done, I think the US dominated.

to me its the golds or wins that count. does anyone care who finished second at the masters, the stanley cup, wimbledon, the super bowl, the rose bowl, the soccer world cup, or any other major sporting event. The answer is no. While medals are nice to win, the gold is what counts IMHO. Remember, second place is the first loser.

To me it's about standing on the podium. I won't belittle the accomplishments of those that finish second and third. ; )

I feel less sorry for Peyton Manning now that I know he won a silver medal in football this year . Heck being on the podium at the Superbowl is just as good as winning it LOL!
Imagine if Brett Farve and the Vikings had been able to play in a bronze medal Super Bowl game and actually won it! I'm sure he would have been delighted with 3rd place. The opinions expressed in this post are mine and may not necessarily reflect the opinions of others on OG.
