Golf Tip 4/10
What is Square?
No good swing comes without a good set-up, so it's important to understand what it means to set up to the ball well. One of the most misunderstood terms associated with the set-up is "square." In a square set-up, lines drawn across the feet, knees, hips, and shoulders all run parallel to the target line, which is an imaginary line running from the ball to the target. Many golfers are confused by this, thinking that their bodies must be aligned at the target. Not so. The body is aligned parallel to the target line, which means it's actually just slightly left or right of the target. Think of it as the golf ball being on one railroad track and your feet are on the other.
It may seem ridiculous to try to align your body "just slightly left or right" of a target that's hundreds of yards away. It is. Rather, start by aligning the clubface squarely, so the leading edge is perpendicular to the target line. Once you are sure the clubface is square, align your body with the clubface. If the lines along the front of your feet, knees, hips, and shoulders are perpendicular to the clubface, your body is square and parallel to the target line.
