How can you measure wood face angle (i.e open/ closed)?

    Hi all,

Is there an easy way and/or cheap tool for measuring face angle on woods (i.e to see if they are open/ closed)?

The only way I know of is to get and upmarket loft and lie machine with a face angle guage like that below, not an option I fancy exploring!!

Someone suggested using a protractor with the shaft as the zero line, is this an option?

    Thanks,

    Rob
