Well, there are 4 officials in soccer. The two linesmen, while usually used to call offsides, can also call fouls, and are connected to the head ref via headsets. A couple weeks ago there was a terrible penalty awarded against Man U by a linesman who imagined a foul in the box on a set piece.

There is already a good 10 minutes lost with players faking injuries, so it's not like there aren't already unnecessary stoppages.

I think the only way to do it successfully would be to give each manager 1 challenge. If they get it right, they get it back, if not, that's the end of their challenges.

What is really needed is a higher standard of reffing. They need more refs like Howard Webb, who takes control of a game early, lets a bit of physical play go, plays advantage well, and can tell a dive from a foul. (But, even though he can tell them apart, he still doesn't card the dives)

As for the world cup, i just hope it's well contested, and England doesn't go to any shootouts.

Clearly then, it is no coincidence that Howard Webb is also bald. Though not as scary looking.

At 12-1 I think Holland is the best value bet. I would have put money on the Germans but no way without Ballack. Injuries are a huge story this time around.

Less Chance now with Nani officially out with a broken collar bone. Portugal will have to rely on CR9 who IMHO is a one trick pony in a TEAM sport.

Ballack is past his best...not a huge loss for Germany.

Argentina is scary with Messi and Tevez up front. With the work ethic of Tevez and the skill of Messi, it's hard not to see them as a favourite.

Ya, but get him a free kick within 30 yards of goal, and more often than not you've got yourself a goal.

African Countries always let me down for one reason or another. Ghana, touted as one of the contenders, viz did a 'Declan Hill' * in a previous WC tournament match - Ghana vs Italy). Yes refereeing leaves a lot to be desired.

This world cup might be different. The bafana boys, aided by the vuvuzelas (Devil's piece) might have a say!

Don't count out Cote d'Ivoire either who has the most Lethal Weapon in its arsenal.

    * Match fixing is a norm in the Far East! So is corrupted soccer referee (to wit NBA referee too).

True if he doesn't get booked for diving to get a free kick!

Argentina have an insane coach. And while Ballack is past his prime, it's a HUGE loss for the Germans.

As long as they've got SCHWEINSTEIGER (sorry for yelling, I just think that's the greatest name in sports), they've got a chance.

Yes he might be 'insane' but he is forever renowned for single-handedly knocking England out of the 1986 WC finals ala 'Hand of God'. IMHO he is the best & greatest footballer akin to Tiger Woods. To some he may be el loco to moi he is a football genius - 'baciato dalla grazia'.

The loss of Ballack would be like Flyers without Pronger pitching & pronging his opponents.

How many times have you seen a guy writhing in pain, both hands in his face, rolling like he's been shot, and then he pops back up as if the Lord miraculously healed him? Rinaldo took a harmless ball to his legs and dropped like a sack of potatoes holding his face. He later admitted "Obviously I exaggerated the incident for the guy to be sent off. " FIFA should have suspended him, they didnt, and so this behavior is tolerated. It's disgusting.
You mean Rivaldo. Diving is not only the domain of South American Players, European players (NHL players too) have known to dive. To wit Rooney ('felled' by Campbell) & Gerrard besides 'tippy toes' Cristiano Ronaldo too but then FA referees, for one reason or another, 'felled' for their 'duplicity' easily.

Will we see 2010 WC referees being 'conned'? Stay tuned!

Guess who's the referee? Carly Simon? Sorry Yankees, no such luck.

    Its Carlos Simon!

The referee chosen for the Group C match between England and USA - Brazilian official Carlos Simon - was suspended for the final month of the domestic season by the Brazilian FA last season after making a number of errors.

In 2009, club side Flamengo wrote to FIFA demanding Simon not be put forward for the World Cup after he sent off one of their players for diving. They said that he was guilty of "unambiguously inconsistent, unfair and inequitable technical performances".
The president of Palmeiras subsequently described Simon as "a crook, a scoundrel and a shameless *** ... if I met him in the street, I would slap him. He should be driven out of football."
Simon is one of the most experienced FIFA officials and refereed at the 2002 and 2006 World Cups. In the last tournament he was criticised for allegedly grinning when he sent off Sweden's Teddy Lucic against hosts Germany.

Agreed 100% ...the Dutch are a great team (especially idf Robben comes through his injury scare) and at 12-1 a great bet.

I've had a little flutter on them already, they are definately worth a wager

I base it on his play of late for Chelsea. The World Cup is one of those few occasions in the soccer world where players 'arrive' and have their coming out parties. I see this as an opportunity for a younger German to step in and filll a role, and make a name for themselves in the process. Fantastic opportunity for Schweinsteiger to step up and become the leader Germany need him to be.
