    shaft pulling

So I am going to pick up a heat gun that has two heat settings (250* or 450*). I think the low setting is good as it is high enough to loosen the epoxy and not high enough to ruin the graphite fibers. Is this correct? Should I be using the low setting?

Also, is it possible for me, if wearing heat resistant gloves, to simply pull the shaft from the head by hand?

Any advice you can provide would be appreciated.

You can pull iron heads by hand, but only because you can twist them, assuming their on steel shafts. NEVER twist a head on a graphite shaft, you'll ruin the shaft EVERY time by twisting the head. Generally you need something to pry the head or push the head straight off when its a graphite shaft.

Thanks - thats good advice. So if I don't care about the graphite shaft, presumably I can just yank away and toss the shaft later.

I think I'm good with this. It'll be a crap shaft that i don't care about, so I can twist away until its out, then drill out the remainder epoxy and I'll be good to go. Time to pick up a heat gun at CDN tire as they're on sale again.

Correct. Any twisting and all you have left is a graphite stick for the tomato plants.

Chances are you'll have to drill out the hosel. Graphite will twist above the hosel and the rest of the shaft will remain in the hosel.

I've learned over the years to use a propane fuel for the iron heads and a butane of for the woods. Butane heats to about 1750 and propane to 3500 and the lower heat is better for the shafts and heads anbd doesn't scald etc. (but it does take a bit longer) ... Just my 2 cents ...
