    Sound masking

I am researching sound masking tools which will help reduce sound and vibrations while a family member sleeps during the day.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has first hand experience with a similar situation and has found a solution that works.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

The wife doing shift work E? We use earplugs, the foam ones, when one needs a daytime nap. But we don't have to deal with vibrations.

    Yup.
With winter approaching, it will be difficult to keep the kids outside of the house for most of the day on weekends. So, I need something which will help her to sleep by blocking out the noise of 3 kids. There are a few sound masking devices on the market, but it is hard to tell if they will work or not.

We also use a white noise CD for our baby's room, because of the two big dogs and our 4 year old. You can download white noise off the net, burn it and put it on repeat on a CD player.

    Noise

My daughter uses a fan in her son's room. I use one also, on low because we sleep with the window open all year round and it does tend to dampen the noise. My wife works the occasional night shift and with it on during the day she never hears me or the dog banging around in the house or yard. Know several other people that also swear by it.

I recall the library at Dawson College when it was new (1990) was equipped with sound damping: it was a series of tiny pipes blowing air that effectively made a constant sound of "shhhhhhhhhhhhh..." It was remarkably effective. After Dawson, at the McGill Library it was earplugs for me.
