NHL GM, build your new franchise!
Okay NHL fans, here's the deal. The NHL in its wisdom has expanded to add a team in Seattle and you're the GM. First thing first, choose your team's name.
To make sure you're competitive, the NHL is allowing you to poach 6 players from any team to start your franchise on the right foot, without salary cap implications.
You get to pick one player for each position (G, D, D, LW, C, RW). Now the order does matter because your first pick gets signed for six years, your second pick gets signed for five years, your third for four years, etc.
So, to start an NHL franchise today, who would you take?
1st (6 year contract) -
2nd (5 year contract) -
3rd (4 year contract) -
4th (3 year contract) -
5th (2 year contract) -
6th (1 year contact) -
Remember, G D D LW C RW in any order. This is in good fun, just to see how many of us are different and the same.Last edited by fundonny; 10-07-2009 at 12:58 PM. Reason: CORRECTION

Hey Donny, you have to pick 6 players but you only have 5 contract years?
This is too easy...lol.If you think it's hard to meet new people, try picking up the wrong golf ball.

Awesome idea Donny!!
Here is my team:
Seattle Emeralds
1st (6 year contract) - Alexander Ovechkin (LW) - Two-time defending MVP who would just as soon go thorugh you as around you.
2nd (5 year contract) - Ryan Getzlaf (C) - I believe in big, strong, talented hockey players and Ryan fits this bill perfectly
3rd (4 year contract) - Cam Ward (G) - At 24 Cam is already one of the best at his craft and he'll only get better
4th (3 year contract) - Jay Bouwmeester - Big, strong, puck-moving d-man just coming into his prime.
5th (2 year contract) - Zdeno Chara (D) - Simply a monster with a BOMB from the point. He will punish opposition forwards all game long
6th (1 year contract) - Jarome Iginla (RW) - Jerome is an all-round player who can play at both ends. Two time winner of the Maurice Richard Trophy and my team's first Captain. He will retire after one year with my team as a Stanley Cup Champion.

Kept all my players Canadian in case Stevie Y reads this:
The Seattle Storm
1st (6 year contract) -Ryan Getzlaf (C) - big, strong, will come into his own with Inginla's mentoring
2nd (5 year contract) - Jay Bouwmeester (D) - great skater, knows when to join the rush
3rd (4 year contract) - Cam Ward (G) - should be on the olympic team, at least the taxi squad
4th (3 year contract) - Mike Green (D) - hard shot from the point
5th (2 year contract) - Jerome Iginla (RW) - team captain, will be signed to an extension and jersey retired
6th (1 year contact) - Danny Heatley (LW) - know better than to sign him long termLast edited by Strangebrew; 10-07-2009 at 01:17 PM. Reason: 6th player addded

I corrected it above, can you lads edit your posts??? Sorry for inconvenience. I wanted to make sure every position was chosen, especially a goalie.

6 year Cam Ward - IMO, the best goalie in the league, and a clear #1 choice for the olympic team. Mediocre during the season, but absolutely unbelievable in the playoffs.
5 year Eric Staal (LW) - the perfect power forward
4 year Jonathan Toews (RW) - Love the way this guy plays. So much creativity...and hustle.
3 year Regehr - Always overlooked, but come crunch time, I don't know there's anyone else I'd rather have on the back end.
2 year Danny Boyle - Despite the crappiness of his team's effort, his display in the first round of last years playoffs was nothing short of magical
1 year Mike Richards (C) (he'll also be wearing the C) - he's my first pick, but he's a loyal guy and will find a starring role on my team...he'll re-sign long term after a year
I'm taking some positional liberties with my forwards, because, well, that's what a good GM does. And I'm not picking Crosby Ovechkin, or Malkin, cuz this thread would get boring fast.

1st (6 year contract) - Ovechkin (the best, period)
2nd (5 year contract) - Chara (dominates his position as much as Ovie)
3rd (4 year contract) - Crosby (great set-up man)
4th (3 year contract) - Luongo (slow start but I am willing to risk it )
5th (2 year contract) - Iginla (will apporach 50 goals this year)
6th (1 year contact) - Lidstrom (smooth puck mover on the back end, under rated defensively - if a 6 time Norris trophy winner could be under rated )

There we go, Lidstrom!! Swerve you get my award for smartest GM so far. He's the best defenseman of all time in my opinion (sorry Bobby). I think he just won player of the decade too, didn't he?
