Historically, I have heard the terms double eagle and albatross used interchangeably.
Edited:
A Scottish Golfing History site ( http://www.scottishgolfhistory.net/bogey_par.htm )contains the following entry:
"Albatross
From there, the 'bird' theme continued. Three under Par is a very rare score and an Albatross is a very rare bird, and now three under Par is generally referred to an "Albatross". However nobody knows exactly when the term was coined and it appears to be quite recent. At late as the 8th April 1935, a day after making an albatross on the par-5 15th hole at Augusta in the Masters, Gene Sarazen referred to his shot as a "dodo". Ab Smith said his group used the phrase 'double eagle' for three under."

thanks guys...mpare sounds like you're familiar with the hole? You're right though, I had 170 left from just inside the right rough and since its a bit of a dogleg I had to carry a few trees, just made it and was sure i saw it bounce on the green. Once I got up there I was pretty annoyed because I couldn't find it, was looking all over the place until I saw a ball mark in line with the pin about 7-8 ft. from the cup..just thought to myself NO WAY looked down and there she was WHHEEEEWWWEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!

That is awesome! Congrats.
Just to be clear, it was hole 4, a par 5, correct?

A buddy of mine holed out in 2 on Meadows South 5 back when it was a par 4. It has since been converted to a par 5, slightly longer.
That's as close as I've been to a -3 on a hole.The more I practice the luckier I get.

The closest I ever came to that was when I borrowed my friends lengthened clubs (i'm 6'6.5" and these things fit me perfectly). I was on a 478 yard par 5. I drove it dead center. Had 200 to the green. My 5 iron hit the top of the flag (would have probably ended up 10-12 feet from the hole had it been inches left or right) and rolled off the green. I then proceeded to flub a chip, blow a putt passed the hole and miss my comebacker for a tidy bogey. Boy was I thrilled.
I doubt I ever come close to pulling that off again. I just don't have the distance anymore (I average in the 220-235yd range with my driver).
Well, I do play Club de Golf Masson-Angers (about 20 minutes east of Gatineau) once a year, where 215 yard par-4s are the norm. I guess I might technically achieve the feat if I keep playing there. (side note: that place isn't bad for those who want to get some cheep practice in. $15 for 18 holes (9 hole course) and despite being a bit of a joke, the course does have one legit par 4 and is very playable. Good for beginners).

i thought about this thread last week. i was taking my 2nd shot on a par 5. i thought, hmmm, what if i get an albatross. So i hit my shot on the green and had a chance for eagle (first ever).
3 putt par. i wanted to end my life right there.
