In a final hour of surprises, Heath Slocum delivered the biggest one Sunday at The Barclays.

The beauty of the playoffs. Heath sneaks in at the 124th position and then wins the first event! Now he sits at #3.
Solid round of golf from Heath. Goydo's, Marino and others just could not finish it off. Including the World's #1 who missed a birdie putt on the 72nd hole. Could he be losing his touch?
The next three events are going to be fun to watch!
My opinions are my own, I do not follow others.

Considering his worst finish in his last five tournaments is second place, I don't think he's losing his touch. Stricker missed the same putt on the same side of the hole - clearly there was a break there that the best in the world mis-read. Obviously you don't like the guy, but I don't think he's lost his touch. He'll be the PGA player of the year again, and will likely win the FedEx cup for a second time in three years. Not a bad year for a guy who's lost his touch.

I shouldn't have taken Golfbum's bait... he got me again. Next he'll post that I'm a Tiger-lover, and he's right. Tiger-lover though I may be, I don't take pleasure in seeing someone miss any putt. I always want to see people play their best, and if I were to tee it up with Golfbum, I'd want to see him play his best - because life is more fun that way.

I'd argue that this past weekend is what is WRONG with the play-offs. Dude pretty much plods along all year, get in by the skin of his golf ball, has one good week and vaults up to 3rd from second last?!?
How is that good for the game?
Slocum is full value for his win, that putt on the 72nd hole was very Tiger-esque however, if this win had of come at any time other than this past week, the impact would have been far, far less.
Slocum is now sitting 3rd in the rankings having won this 1 tournament to go along with 1 other top 10 this year. He is ahead of every Major winner, guys with multiple wins and guys with 6, 7 even 8 top 10s. How is that supposed to be representative of who had the best year??
Sorry, this is nothing more than a 4 week tournament with a big prize to the winner. IMO
The way it is currently structured you'll see the top 20 players in the World playing fewer and fewer PGA events because they know that all they have to do is get in to the top 125 to have a great shot at winning the 10M. I'm NOT a fan of this set-up.
Let's say that Slocum wins the next two, only to finish 2nd to Tiger or anyone else in the top 5 slots in the Tour Championship, Slocum loses. How can you win 3 events, finish 2nd in 1 and NOT finish first??
Me thinks that more tweaking is needed

Not saying you're necessarily wrong, but this is exactly how the playoffs in other sports work. It doesn't matter if you win every single regular season game, it's an even playing field once the playoffs start.
ie when the steelers won the superbowl. They were the last seed, and won al their playoffs games. It wasn't a flaw in the system, it was clutch play from the steelers. That's sort of the point of playoffs, no?

Then why is Slocum not in first place after winning the first event of the playoffs?

Hey now, I started off by saying he wasn't necessarily wrong. I'm not saying the system is perfect, just saying I don't think it's really a flaw that a lower ranked player can move way up the board with a win.
For the record, in other sports you wouldn't be automatically ranked #1 just for winning your first game/round
Obviously you can't compare other sports directly to golf since it's stroke play, not match play, so you can't just reseed after each round. But winning a tournament in the playoffs SHOULD give you a better chance to win the whole thing, IMO

Apples and Oranges IMO as hockey, football, basketball etc. are win or your out team sport play-off systems but for the sake of debate, - The Steelers didn't go from the last seed to the 3rd seed with 1 win and Tiger didn't get eliminated because he lost.
If you are in a round-about way suggesting that golf should have a massive "win or your out tournament" (aka Match Play) to determine the season champ then I'm 100% with ya.

Agreed. The playoffs should be a match play bonanza. I bet the real golf fans would get into that.

One important point missed is the fact that the field sizes decrease in each playoff event. The Barclay's is the only one close to a full-field with 125 players. The next 3 fields are 100, 70, and 30. It's not a free ride all the way through. Trahan still has to continue to perform in order to get through to each round.
When applying the Rules, you follow them line by line. You don't read between them.

True, but one good showing will carry you through. It is very easy to jump a number of spots with a good week (124th to 3rd in Slocum's case) It far harder to drop a number of spots. (i.e. Tiger entered the this past weekend with 3431 points. If he did NOT play a shot he'd still be in 1st place, 326 points ahead of Steve Stricker) The play-offs allow the bottom feeders to jump over many, many spots, but not performing doesn't hurt you nearly as bad.........if Tiger had a bad weekend in a matchplay event he'd be gone.......same way as how the Leafs beat Ottawa all those years, the Sens were the superior team, they just didn't perform over the course of a few weeks (I know I'm grasping, but you get the analogy that I'm drawing.)
