For me, a competitor using a device that can do more than is allowed is not a problem. It is a game of honor and I do not stand beside my FC when they have to drop a ball or always look at them to ensure they do not move their ball or do something against the rules. I am not about to ask if his device is telling him slope or any other information which may contrevene the rules.
If I do not have to buy another device to give me distances etc and if the rules allow it then I will use it. I agree that there is a contradiction that the slope reading device is not allowed if that function can be turned off. That's weird.Lefty Lucas
I am abidextrous, I once golfed right-handed and now I shoot left-handed just as badly!

I can say from having owned a Pinseeker with Slope the very, very rarely doesn't that slope inpact the distance more than 3-4 yards. If you are big time up or downhill (i.e. #18 at the Nation) there will be a significant difference, but if you didn't already know that you had to hit 1 or 2 clubs less than a range finder isn't going to help you much anyway

OK, this one is bugging me..........
I'm cutting and pasting some of my comments from a different thread:
I think that the decision quoted (14-3/16) doesn't apply here. I believe that the rules are trying to differentiate between DMDs and other "electronic devices" the confusion stemms from the fact that with with the advent of Bluetooth gps dongles many electronic devices can be easily turned into DMDs.
The decision 14-3/16 doesn't mention Distance Measuring Devices at all - given how detailed the rules are does this not strike you as curious.
After reading all 16 exemptions to 14-3 I am even more convinced that 14-3/16 is NOT intended to cover Distance Measuring Devices. There are other more detailed decisions covering very specific issues including 14-3/0.5, 14-3/1 and 14-3/4.
I'd really like to hear from some of the other Rules Officials on this one.......

the iphone is def illegal because it has a built in level. The berry and other smart phones with internet access CAN access information in real time like Humity, wind, cloud ceiling and many other things and although the arguement has been made that those pieces of information are not provided in REAL time (it is provided in realtime if you pay for it)... one can also make the case that they don't need to be provided in real time, the fact that the info is changing and therefor wasn't avail PRIOR to the round starting (as it has now changed) makes all data devices with internet access illegal.
