    Smuggler's Shootout

So, who's playing? I'll be there, but only in an "official" capacity.

Still a few spots left apparently. 96 player field, 15 index or less.

Winning score was about 2 over par for the 2 rounds...the weather today was incredibly bad, then good, then bad, then not so good etc, etc...at one point the hail coming down made every one wait on the fairways for about 15 minutes as the greens were covered in hail and were actually white. Low score today was 73. Great time, tough tough set up, really good field. Looking forward to next years event.

I was with the final group for the last 6 or 7 holes (Allen McGee, Brad Revell, and Peter Sauerbrei). They're all wonderful ball strikers, with very patient, methodical, and efficient games. The conditions were some of the toughest I've seen in years with the low temps, high winds, intermittent blowing rain and hail, and add to that a very technically difficult course. Any score posted within sniffing distance of par was nothing less than superb, especially under tournament conditions in the final group.

Sauerbrei was off the pace a bit early, and was trying to play catch-up the rest of the day. He made a wonderful save from the trees on 14, and was only 2 back at that point, but his putter let him down on 15.

Revell's putting was up and down too, and he ended up making a costly 3-putt on 17 to give McGee a 1 shot cushion heading to 18.

Mcgee was steady, with his only reall hicup being his drive into the hazard on 13, but he recovered nicely after taking his drop and scorched a fairway wood from an uphill lie, right down the pipe to get back into position.

All 3 hit perfect drives on 18, and with the tee moved up to 565 yards (, still 535-ish as the crow flies with the 2nd shot cutting the corner over the pond) they all had the opportunity to go at the green in 2. Revell was first to play from about 255 and striped a wood that hit just below pin high and finished in the back fringe. Sauerbrei was next, hitting a towering draw that over-hooked a bit and ended up in the mounds back left. McGee, seeing where Revell's ball ended up, too the safe route, laying up to about 120, and then hitting a wonderful short iron to about 12 below the hole. Revell leaves his eagle chip short, McGee makes his 12-footer for birdie, and the rest is history. The grounds crew did a fantastic job preparing the course, especially after all the rain late last week.

I'm already looking forward to next year.
