getting rid of squirrels in attic
I have some unwanted squirrels in my attic. I located the hole in the roof where they are entering. Anyone recommend any solutions or companies to correct this problem?

Steel wool, that's what we used at the cottage.

12 gauge---you wont have any pieces to pick up----you may have to fix the roo tho!
Used the steel wool or some heavier mesh other than screen--it workedDoes the 2nd hole-n-one come easier ?

careful.. any babies? you need to trap them ALL. if you block entry you also block exit. any little ones left behind that die will not smell so good after about 4-5 days.

looks like a family of 4 and having a party. I'm going to get a wildlife removal company to take care of it...they put up a one way door so everyone gets out before blocking up the hole.

I would recommend AAA Wildlife. I have used them, they are very professional and pricing is reasonable.

I recommend a DIY job. Traps are readily available and its not hard to do.
I live in the country and we deal with those rodents on an ongoing basis.

Wow lots of money.
I heard that they move out when the babies are born. Then seal up after. But maybe they could be doing damage, annoying. Good luck

Get rid of them soon. My sister had one in her house. It chewed its way into her house through a screen. After its entry was blocked that way, it gnawed its way in through the dryer vent. That adventure cost her more than you would think because the squirrel destroyed part of the dryer's operational parts. Lovely creatures!

If you are handy then try and figure out where they are getting in and block it off with steel mesh (not screen). Then just put a big tray of mouse and rat poison (the kind that makes them get thirsty so they leave your attic before they die) mixed in with a bunch of peanuts in your attic. I had some squirrels and mice in my attic, and this seems to work very well. The tray gets cleaned up, and all the scratching noises go away.

Been there, done that.
I had a similar problem last spring. Squirrel in through the powder room exhaust fan between the first and second floor.
Tried a lot. Blocked them in. They started chewing through the wood and walls. Next I waited in the morning until the mother left. Blocked the hole with an entire old bed sheet. When I got home that night it was completely shredded into pieces.
Next morning I blocked it again with a thicker sheet and tied some knots in it. This seemed to do the trick. Left on a two week business trip and when I got home the stench was unbearable. Yup, the babies died (didn't know they were there) and boy did it stink. You don't want that. It took almost a year for the smell to go away even after I removed and cleaned up everything.
My advice, wait until she leaves, block her out and get up in your attic and find the nest and get rid of it and all the crap they've left behind. If you're lucky she won't have had the babies yet.
Good luck.

I ended up contacting Humane Wildlife Control and the guy came this morning. It wasn't cheap but I couldn't stand the noise anymore. I can not get to this part of the attic from the inside cause it’s a cathedral ceiling and I'm not comfortable climbing up a ladder that high.
Once the one-way door was set up, the mother left shortly and the little ones followed. They were still trying to get back into the nest but couldn't
The guy will be back in a couple of weeks to de-odorize the area to prevent them and others from coming back...then seal the hole for good. Hope this is the last visit from those rodents.
Sounds like these companies are doing good business this time of year.

Just wait till they set up home in your car heater---came back from down south--started the car and turned the fan on---straw all over the place --plus the smell could not drive with the windows closed for almost a year
Does the 2nd hole-n-one come easier ?

I once had one take up residence in my toyota tercel about 12 years ago. My solution was to park the car in the full sun in a black asphalt parking lot with the windows up on a hot summer day. Squirrel abandoned the car in about an hour and a half. Can't really do that with a house, though.
Looks like the pros helped you, I like to think my cats will keep them away.Andrew
