I know it's not an exact idea as to how a shaft will play, but just how stiff is 252 @ 46"?

Depends on which scale you're using. How much weight on the tip end? How far from the butt end was the shaft clamped?

It's a Rapport Blue Velvet and it either says "Tour Stiff" or "Tour Extra Stiff" down near the tip, I can't remember. Just curious as to how "stiff" this is. The sticker on the butt end says 252.

That's what I mean. On the scale that Mercury used to use, 250 was mid to upper X.

I was basing it on Aldila's specs but I don't claim to be an expert in this dept.

Very interesting indeed...looking forward to hearing about the results.

Some good info here...I was curious about my Code 6 that has 258 on the butt end sticker...and now plays 44.5" long in my driver.

I am surprised that no one has asked what length of clamp was used to determine 252 cpm's @46".

If a 3" clamp is used the shaft will measure considerably softer than a 5" clamp. On my 5" clamp, 252 @ 46" is a classic "stiff" shaft.

    Author David Eager:

    Dale,

Just as a clarification my references are to the FM System designed by Dr. Joe Braly. I am not familiar with any changes that may have been made by True Temper and their designated instructors at Swing Science.

Sorry but Rifle did not have a standard 2 1/2" clamp. Their clamping dimension is floating so that they can duplicate the known frequency of the calibration shaft.

Our clamping dimension varied from 2 1/4"" to 2 5/8" in order to do that duplication and 2 3/8" was the most common.

The 2 1/2" Clamp is accepted as the Rifle standard by the outside clubmaking community but it reality it does not exist.

I'll give you the 285 gm tip weight, but it really is a store bought 3/8" drill chuck.

The entire simplicity of the Rifle system is that they always start with a known Frequency and work from there.

The machine and Frequency is so fickle that you have to re-calibrate the clamp every time that you use it, even if you let it sit for a short while.

I don't have a help file for the program it is only supposed to be used by our Canadian Rifle School graduates

Raw shaft. It's still in the wrapper.
