Distance Measuring Devices
Let's say that I'm playing in a tournament and distance measuring devices are allowed (distance measuring only, NOT slope, temperature etc.). If I am so inclined, am I allowed to share the readings with my FCs??
Would providing distance information be considered giving advice under 8-1?

ok so you can ask how far is the hole but you can't ask which club he used right? if someone asks, and the FC answers, who is the penalty on?

Correct, you can't ask the club.
If you ask, you get a penalty. If he answers then he also gets a penalty. Not fat anymore. Need to get better at golf now!

8-1/8 Comment About Club Selection After Stroke
Q. After playing a stroke, a player says: “I should have used a 5-iron.” Was the player in breach of Rule 8-1?
A. If the statement was made casually, there was no breach. If the statement was made to another player who had a shot to play from about the same position, there was a breach.

what if it was made to no one in particular, just talking to him self loud enough that others could hear... who still had to take their shot from the same spot

i suppose i should re-word my last post. He yells it our after coming up short. Yells it to himself or the golf gods. The 3 players still to play get all the info they need. this is no different than saying "hey guys... this is the club i used"
just because he didn't do it on purpose of with the intention of helping them out doesn't mean he didn't do it. why in this case do they look at your intention before seeing if you should be penalized? any other rules like that?willy

I can see your point sillywilly. There are lots of things that may happen that we didn't intend on, but we still get penalized. Why is this one different?
How about this scenario. First golfer teeing off on a dog leg. Decides to hit his driver. Drives it through the fairway into the far trees of the dogleg. Says casually, "Guess I shouldn't have hit the driver". The remaining three golfers, all leaning on their drivers return to their bag to grab the 3-wood.
Penalty?
He did say it casually without intent to give the others information about what club he was swinging (as if they couldn't tell it was the driver).

I know that this scenario is covered in the decisions, I'm just too lazy to search for it right now.
