Where do you rank The Players?
Some love it, some hate it. Personally it's my second favourite tournament after The Masters.

One thing about watching the Players is how every year they talk about how it is the "5th major" as nauseum. Then they ask everybody they interview about whether or not it should be a major. It's the same story every year. Why can't it just be a great tourney at a great course? There are plenty of others just like it. The Memorial for instance is on par with the Players in my opinion.

For a few reasons...
a) The British and US are true open tournaments. As long as you meet the minimum handicap standard, any Joe Schmoe can try to qualify. The Masters is by invitation only.
b) The British Open is golf in its purest form. You play every shot imaginable, and the courses can be drastically different from day to day, depending on the elements.
c) The US Open is by far the toughest all-around test in golf. The winner of that tournament has to not only have the soundest swing that week, but also the toughest mental game.
d) While the Masters is a great tournament, IMO it benefits more from its position in the yearly rotation. If it was played later in the year, after another one or two majors, it wouldn't have the same prestige. When applying the Rules, you follow them line by line. You don't read between them.

British Open - because of its uniqueness
Players - best quality field of the year
US Open - brutally tough course setup
US Ladies Open - ditto
Masters - because we are golf starved in April
A major is a major only because someone says it is.
If The Masters was held in October, would it rank as high?

1. The Open (for all the reasons already stated...the original and the purest, plus I grew up watching it)
2. The Ryder Cup (for the rivalry and the match play format which I love)
3. The US Open (for all the reasons already stated)
4. The Masters (mostly because it is in April)
after that i find them all equally enjoyable really...I like the match play events and I like the Players because the field is strong but not really the course. I also like the 2 opens and the Ryder Cup most because they are played on fantastic but different courses each year.

Now if this was 15 years ago, I would have put the Canadian Open in there but alas it's lost its luster.

The Canadian Open is the third oldest National Championship in golf. Yet it gets no respect.
Thanks in part to Tim Finchem & The PGA and also fan support. How many of you have been to more than one Canadian Open?
Personally I have attended it 5 times and enjoyed every minute of it.
Yes I know it moves around the country. But when it is close enough to drive to people need to support it.
As for the Players. The Pro's call it the 5th Major. It is set up like a Major and draws one of the best fields in golf.
My opinions are my own, I do not follow others.

I know even Tiger calls it 'The 5th Major' but the best way to tell Tiger really doesn't treat it like a major... he played Quail Hollow the week before. I think its a great tourney, but I think the added coverage, added attention makes it feel like a major. If Quail Hollow or The Canadian Open was given the press/coverage like Sawgrass they might be up at the status of a Major as well.
