    Question Rules Question

Did anyone see Sergio's near chip-in on the 1st playoff hole yesterday at the Tour Championship? More importantly, did anyone see him moving the ball during his address? I thought that when addressing the ball, you cannot move the ball. Sergio moved the ball up and down in the fringe for a good 3 - 4 seconds with his 10+ waggles at address. Is this permitted? I'm pretty sure that you cannot move the ball while you address it, but the commentators didn't seem to take issue with this.

I didn't actually see the playoff.

Could you describe the movement of the ball in more detail?

Moved: A ball is deemed to have “moved’’ if it leaves its position and comes to rest in any other place.

    (wobbling is not moving)

Under Rule 18-2, a player is exempt from penalty for touching his ball with a club in the act of addressing it. However, the ball may not leave its position and come to rest in any other place.

I saw it too Gary. The most proper way to explain it would be that he "tucked" his wedge under/against his ball, then proceeded to waggle/wobble his ball 10+ times. It shook pretty good tho.

    Question Sergio

    Thanks for the quick response.

When Sergio addressed the ball, he was pressing up and down on the greenside rough (the spongy kind) about an inch behind the ball. As he was pressing up and down on the rough, the ball was moving in unison with the club's movements (although never touching the clubface). The ball was moving a good half-inch up and down in synch with the clubhead movement for about 4 seconds. But, as you alluded to, it did not actually move from its position on the grass - just the grass underneath the ball. It looked as though the ball was bobbing up and down.
