    Like none of us have ever played for a looney or a tooney or won a door prize or closest to the pin or buying the next round of drinks or winning a golf club etc
    Where my handicap is sitting at as we speak I do not have to worry about that.
    Come on. I just posted this because someone might be interested. No need to jump all over the place.

    There are a bunch of guys that play in the Citizen that also participate and win money in these 'super scramble' type events.....

    In amateur events you can win up to $1000. On the RCGA web site amateur status is explained.

    Yeah! You're right, let's start an investigation into this SCANDAL!!! I know a bunch of guys who would be disqualified...but, since the RCGA doesn't have the authority to issue warrants and to compel me before one of their committees, they are safe...

    If the money could be considered informal gambling or wagering it would be OK for one wishing to retain amateur status. $3164 for first place is considerable coin. Not what I'd call "playing the game for the enjoyment". The problems here are highlighted.
    Acceptable Forms of Gambling
    There is no objection to informal gambling or wagering among individual golfers or teams of golfers when it is incidental to the game. It is not practicable to define informal gambling or wagering precisely, but features that would be consistent with such gambling or wagering include:
    • the players in general know each other;
    • participation in the gambling or wagering is optional and is limited to the players;
    • the sole source of all money won by the players is advanced by the players; and
    • the amount of money involved is not generally considered to be excessive.
    Therefore, informal gambling or wagering is acceptable provided the primary purpose is the playing of the game for enjoyment, not for financial gain.

    Ok then Gerry. Under these rules the winner of the 3 man scramble could cash in $3000 between the 3 of them and give $164 to charity and they would be clear???
    Or subtract the $100 to get in from the total sum.

    • the players in general know each other; Most of the guys playing in this will know each other...
    • participation in the gambling or wagering is optional and is limited to the players; it is optional, you don't have to play in the event...
    • the sole source of all money won by the players is advanced by the players; and
    • the amount of money involved is not generally considered to be excessive. Is $1000 each excessive? According to the RCGA it isn't.
    Therefore, informal gambling or wagering is acceptable provided the primary purpose is the playing of the game for enjoyment, (a competition in a 3 man scramble format is fun and enjoyable, so why not have some fun with something on the line?) not for financial gain.

    What's up with all of the kill-joys? Most of the guys complaining about it don't even play in RCGA sanctioned events. Lighten up and have some fun. I understand if you have plans to go to the Canadian Amateur you may want to make sure things are ok.

    Agreed...plus the money is in envelopes so there is no evidence of earning money anyways...PLUS they don't post stats or results anywhere.
