    Quiz question #3?

    Even if we can't play all winter... maybe Gary can keep our minds sharp by at least understanding the rules better, come April...

    Question

    In stroke play, a player cuts the cover of his ball on a shot to the green. He declares the ball unfit for play and substitutes another ball. He accidentally puts that same ball back into play on the next tee. What's the ruling?

    Guessin'

    Pulling this one out of the air here Gary:

    I know I'm mistaken, (in fact it's an almost certainty) But I'll take a SWAG (scientific wild a--ed guess) on this one.

    I was under the impression that you were allowed to exchange your ball once it landed on the green-without having to declare it as being unfit. Therefore declaring it unfit while on the green was a statistical impossibility. Or at the very least irrelevant to whether you exchanged it or not.

    Again, there4, he may play his 1st ball with impunity.

    (feel free to hack away mercilessly-and with great glee-at my take on the ruling here Gary)

    Jimmy;
    I do not think you can change a ball in play for any reason other than "unfit for play". Once you have holed out you can change the ball for the next hole, but not on the green.

    The PGA has a "local rule" stating that a player must play the same make and model of ball for all holes in a stipulated round. I do believe it would be OK to play a Maxfli in round1 and a Strata in round 2 (Gary is that right?) Anyway, that rule does not apply to you and I. You can play a hard "distance" ball on a par 5 and a softie on a par 3 if you like.

    -----------------------------------

    Taking a guess at the question here. (More fun than looking it up)

    The ball could no longer be declared unfit for play in it's current condition, as long as it is still the ball in play. The player has already decided to play the ball in that condition. After the completion of the hole he could discard the ball and use another.
