Hole in one with two balls
Saw this on another forum and thought I'd wet the juices over here and see what results come up.
Question:
On a par 3 a player scores a hole-in-one with a ball other than the original ball that he played on that hole.

Depends on the circumstances. I whacked my tee shot into the water on a Par 3 at the OG Ryder Cup and had to retee. The second ball went in the hole on the fly for a 3
The opinions expressed in this post are mine and may not necessarily reflect the opinions of others on OG.

Sneaky this morning aren't we.
There are a few conditions in which the stroke at the original ball can be cancelled. A quick look gave me the following:
1. Original ball breaks into two pieces. (5-3)
2. Opponent's caddie or equipment deflects the ball. (19-3)Not fat anymore. Need to get better at golf now!

Good to see the thinking caps on. Looks good for four of them and as AAA said we're half way home.

Player makes practice swing and the ball is dislodged from the tee and lost. Tees another ball and holes the ball with his first stroke.
When applying the Rules, you follow them line by line. You don't read between them.

In that case, he has still holed out with "the original ball that he played on the hole".
Here's a few other possibilities:
In a situation where the original ball played from the tee is overhanging the hole, then under Rule 16-2 player is allowed "enough time to reach the hole without unreasonable delay and an additional ten seconds to determine whether the ball is at rest". If during that time the ball was moved by 1) an outside agency, 2) a fellow-competitor, or 3) an opponent and the original ball was not recoverable, then under Rule 19 the original ball would be replaced with a substitute ball. If the substitute ball subsequently fell into the hole within the 10 seconds allowed, then he would be credited with a hole-in-one. So that could be 3 of the 4 others.
Here's a real oddball scenario. A bird or animal (i.e., an outside agency) perched atop the flagstick in the hole swallows the original ball (i.e., it is not recoverable). Under Rule 19-1, a substitute ball would "be placed, as near as possible to the spot directly under the place where the ball came to rest in or on the outside agency" - which in this case would be in or the lip of the hole!
