An interesting image for Remembrance Day
Canadian War Memorial, Vimy, France
I remember reading a quote that suggested the First World War was a reinvention of landscape - though the quote was better, and I can't currently place it. This photo shows the no-mans land at Vimy Ridge. It looks, even after so many years, very alien and un-natural. Pounded by shells, pitted with huge bunkers (named things like 'Montreal' and 'Vancouver'), the earth has been resculpted by concentrated modern warfare. Though, oddly, it also looks a little like a golf course.Life dinnae come wit gimmies so yuv got nae chance o' gitt'n any from me.

I've been there once and quite frankly, it is absolutely unreal. I visited a couple of "no mans' land" zones along what used to be the western front and it is quite surprising how close the opposite armies were from each others. Just thinking about the amount of unexploded shells, amunitions and chemical bombs is enought to give you "froid dans le dos"...
