Garden of Eden

A player hit his ball towards a garden, (Grounds Under Repair in local rules). He was certain that the ball had come to rest in the garden and his fellow competitor was of the same opinion. The ball could not be found after a two minute search so the player dropped a ball within 1 club of the nearest point of relief, as determined by where he felt the ball last crossed the margin of the garden. The ball bounced into the garden. Then, his fellow competitor found his original ball in a patch of long grass, just short of the garden.

The player does not know which ball to play. Help him out.

Now, the player picks up the SB and plays the OB. What's the ruling?

and what does correcting involve, here? Any other penalty(s)?

Firstly , I think we must clarify if the dropped ball is in play ? it bounced into the garden and must be redroped .....is it now "the ball in play" even tho it isnt "in play"

If it is the player would avoid any penalty for touching his ball and must return to that area and redrop , and play out the hole before teeing off at the next hole

Since the search was only TWO minutes and he has NOT played his dropped ball should he not play the original since his FIVE minutes was not up and he has not played a shot with the dropped ball before the original was found???

From the last two posts the ruling then becomes centred on whether or not the substituted ball IS the ball in play, or only becomes the ball in play AFTER the 5 minutes has expired. Time to check the rule.

This is an awesome post BC ....it raises many question the more I think about it

Maybe the player has finished the hole , with only a 2 shot penalty for wrong place

With the original ball becoming a substitute ball for the substitute ball but dropped in a wrong place

Note 3: If a player incurs a penalty for making a stroke from a wrong place, there is no additional penalty for substituting a ball when not permitted.
